While I am not a big fan of 2 channel audio no matter how good it is, I am a fan of accurate playback without enhancements that fundamentally change the intentions of the audio engineer. If it is 2 channel, play it back as 2 channel. If it is multi-channel, play it back with the proper multichannel setup.

+1. Well said and explained Sir Terrence.

I hold an opposing preference in that I prefer 2-Channel music...more specifically analog/vinyl. However, I play-back my CD's and occasionally MP3 in 2-channel as well and would never entertain other options.

Sir Terrence, I have to disagree with you. We are all little boys who enjoy playing with and tweaking our equipment.

We don't care about accurate audio/video. We love that remote control to continuosly change things. Sometimes it is more fun and enjoyable than the movie or the two-channel music. Some of us have sacrificed our children's future college education to buy our home theater equipment. We have every right to play with them.

P.S. Dolby Pro Logic IIx has a couple of additional options.

Hey Big Daddy!

I think you're being too tough on Sir T! His point is very valid and one I absolutely concur with. He is absolutely right!

I'm surprised actually to hear you say "We don't care about accurate audio/video". I do understand however that it's fun to tweak with our setups and "play with them", but the TS shouldn't be misled either.

Iam one of those people, that are not hell bent on one way only.I also love useing DSP modes. The way i look at it is use it if you got it,It nice to have choices

Good ozzman you are for using that Pure Direct option! Been playing David Bowie's Young Americans all weekend. Hadn't listened to it in some time and it's been a fun ride.

I suppose you should listen to music in whatever way you want, but I'm more of a purist at heart!

Bottom line...if it makes you happy...do it!

For me it's Hunky Dory.
I got my son to burn all David Bowie from 74 to 86.
My wife is getting sick of Bowie but for me iam just going down memory lane when i was 16 ,Young and FREE

Spoken like a true audio engineer...

On the Pioneer THX units, there's a "7Ch Stereo" mode that works OK - slight center channel mixing, decreasing volume for the rears, and the sub is engaged. I like that best, other than "Direct" (2CH with the sub engaged) and Pure Direct (straight 2CH, no sub).

The rest of the modes just trash the sound, including all of the Dolby/DTS modes that blow the whole audio stage with center-heavy blending.

Shame on ya BD. I just wanted to let you know that your favorite 2 channel recording is one I mixed. I purposefully inserted a submixed subliminal message that will instruct you to give me all of your equipment in exchange for a Bose surround system, and a 32" CRT television from Apex. Sorry

I was just trying to tease you. You must have some fun every once in a while.

I knew you were teasing man, I thought it was funny myself. Now, did you listen to the two channel mix yet? I will send you my address so you can ship your equipment, and receive your bose/apex system.

Hey, don't knock two-channel. About 99% of my favorite music was recorded in two-channel and no amount of engineering is going to make it any better in multichannel. Heck, I like a lot of jazz from pre-'57 when the move to stereo was made. Prior to that, it's all monaural and that's ok with me.

I don't listen to music on my system. I was asking to reference to some TV shows I watch that are only 2 Ch. I have a Yamaha 663 FYI

Ah, in that case I do use my Integra's "all stereo" mode, and do not use the front L/R (to save hours on my tube amp).

What is your Yamaha defaulting to when playing these 2 channel TV shows?

There is something to be said about listening to a well recorded 2 channel music presentation. In many ways it is more like sitting in an audience listening to a live performance than listening to a multi-channel rendering.
