I have a 37" Sharp Aquos 720p/1080i HDTV that I got a couple years ago. I've read everything and anything about 720p and 1080i and their pluses and negatives. I just need an opinion on whether to watch Blus in 720p or 1080i because I JUST can't decide!!!! CRAZY! Do you prefer 720 or 1080i???

I've read lots of posts bantering on about which is better. After you sift through the debris, inevitably someone will tell you to watch a movie in 720p and then watch it again in 1080i and to let your eyes make the decision for you. Today, I will be that person. Let me know what you decide.

Thanks Ex Accountant. I have done that. But just when I think that 1080i is better I switch back to 720p and then I think that is better. My eyes just can't decide. Last edited by Audiophile_At_Birth; 01-11-2009 at 06:11 AM. |

Many enthusiasts believe that 720p video looks superior to 1080i, despite the increase in vertical resolution. As Ex Accountant mentioned, let your eyes be the judge.
Another thing to consider is that your screen is 37". Generally, this is about the threshold between noticing the visual difference between 720 and 1080. If your screen was larger, say, 40" or especially 50", then the issue becomes much greater. Why not post up your personal findings. I think many of us would be interested in your input. - Rob J |

Thanks Guys. I first experimented with Wanted in 1080i. To me the fast action scenes were a little blurry, but then I just took it into account that my contacts were dry. All re-wetted thanks to some Visine, I didn't seem to notice the blur so much. Back to 720 and I felt like I was losing some picture quality. But I wasn't to sure. I will continue to experiment. But as of now...I like 1080i for my eyes in terms of picture quality...but 720p seems to just grap me back after I make my decision.

Pico, I'll let you know which one I think is better when I get my New Sony 1080p projector.
And I bought my TV almost three years ago. That was before you even thought about buying a 1080p TV. I was a Junior in HIGH SCHOOL. I worked all summer long for my Aquos, and yes it was when 37in TVs were 1400-1500 dollars. This was when HDTV was still a luxury, not a need. So yes, at the time 720p/1080i were the standard. Hell this was when Sony was still making 40"lcd. Not your norm 37, 42, 46, 52 inchers. And believe it or not, a majority of HDTVs in households are still 720p/1080i |

I'm moving out soon, and my dad said it'd be cool if I had my own theater room in my condo/townhouse place. He would help with the remodel of the room/wiring management, painting, sound proofing, and furnishing...and I would foot the bill for a new projector. And yes I like the new sony projectors they recently released this past fall.

Same with me. We'll probably be in limbo until the next latest and greatest technology comes forth.

First, ignore the babble from the 1080p fanbois. Anyone who spouts comments like that obviously has no clue what they talking about. Resolution is only a part of the overall picture. Most experts rate it fourth behind color accuracy, contrast and motion resolution.
For your question, I assume you are asking about cable/sat? For BD, you should just send a 1080p signal to your set and let your set scale it to it's native resolution (probably 768p). Unless your set doesn't accept a 1080p signal? In that case, it will come down to which device has the better deinterlacer. There is no right or wrong answer, as it will depend on your equipment and what you see in the picture. Try it both ways and pick the one you like best. For cable, I send my set 1080i, but I really don't see a difference between that and 720p. |
