Cablevision didn't give you a universal remote when you got the cable box?

I work for a cable company here in florida, we use UEI remotes that have a Audio/Aux button to set to ss receivers. It should have come with a booklet as well with codes for receivers as well. That should get you up and running with everything, I hopes this helps you out some.

If you are looking to just manage the cable box, TV and receiver, you may be better off with a lower end remote. The remote from your cable company should be sufficient and as Sloan78 indicated, there should be a booklet that came with the remote that identifies all of the manufacturers and models that it supports. Use the "AUX" button to manage your recevier.

However, if you envision that you will be expanding your system in the future or require more advanced features than the basic commands, the Logitech remotes are the way to go. They have a very comprehensive list of components that they support. The following is a link to determine if they support your components:

Yes it should have a video source button it (ours on on the botom left corner of the remote) to allow you changes through all video source modes.

I use the 659 w/ my set-up as well. Works everything perfectly, mind you it's not one of the more fancier Harmony remotes but it gets the job done and I got it for free (I think it sells for $40 or something). Though it may have been phased out, I think, I don't know....

Definitely, there should be a button on the remote to change the input source. I have COX cable and on the remotes that they provided me, there is a button called "INPUT" which is used for this purpose.

Now there may be an outside chance that your cable remote may be malfunctioning which happened to me before so you should be able to change it to one that is properly working. But it seems like the standard cable remote should be sufficient for your needs.

If you are into touch screens, I like the idea of the Logitech Harmony remotes, but if you like to FEEL Buttons...You simply cannot beat the MX-500 HomeTheater Master remote control.

The only things it CAN'T do are start your car and turn on your PS3.

If you buy the wavebird ir remote for the ps3, it WILL interact with the USB interface and you can control the PS3.

That's only IF a PS3 is even an issue for you.

If that solution bugs you a little, then go with the Harmony, because they have an adapter that does it all for PS3.

School, I had a lot of the same questions you have. The best thing for you is to visit logitech.com under universal remote you can enter the model numbers of your equipment and it will tell you whether or not their database has the software to operate your components

Also visit the sticky for logitech remotes. There is quite a bit of info there.

I had a Pronto.... it was a TSU9600 and it seemed to be able to learn any/all commands I programmed it for, but it was kinda a pain to operate (so I got rid of it)

I'd give them, and Logitech a call with your component model, and they should be able to tell you about any compatibility issues.

I just got a Harmony One remote. I love this thing. I have a lot of components just like you do, and this controls every aspect of every one of them with ease. Granted, it might be more than what you're looking to spend (I'm not sure if you specified a price), but it was well worth the ~$160 I spent. Check the link ShyBoy gave you; that's where you'll find all the answers you need as to whether any of the Logitech remotes will do what you need them to. I'm guessing that volume and input selection control are not going to be big issues.

On that note....

I find most receivers to be incompatible with the "Input" button on cable companies' remotes, since most receivers have direct-select sources, not an "input next" method of selecting your source. So, I find I usually have to use the number pad and write down what number gets what source for the customer. And even then, sometimes I can't get all sources to show up with the number keys. Just my two cents from experience...

EDIT: And, actually, one more thing... Given that most receivers have seperate on and off IR commands, most cable company remotes are unable to power them on and off, since they only have a single power toggle button, not seperate on and off codes. But, the volume works 99% of the time!
