Default Odd BD distortion, any ideas?

Hey guys,

I'm quite new to the whole Blu-ray scene and I hope you can help me out with a problem I'm having. Kinda hard to explain but here goes...

I've noticed lately that in dark scenes, certain dark textures will tend to "shift". It's usually subtle, but still drives me nuts. For example, during the opening scene (interview of the Replicant) of Blade Runner, the facial features...namely the cheeks...of the Replicant will seem to move within his face, when they are clearly not supposed to.

Another notable time that I have seen this is while watching The Longest Day. A solder runs up and sits up against a wall. The wall will appear to move, even though the camera is perfectly stationary and definitely should not be moving.

I suspect the problem is with PowerDVD, but I'm not sure. Before I drop another $60-100 on upgrading PowerDVD or switch to a different app, I'm curious to know what you think. I haven't seen anything like this watching HD cable content, or gaming...so I do not suspect the TV itself.

I'm currently using the PowerDVD 7.3 BD edition (with the latest patch) that came with the drive.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

HTPC Specs
CPU: Intel e8500
RAM: 4GB DDR2 1066MHz
Video: ATI 4870 HD
BD-Drive: Lite-On 4x (DH-4O1S-58)
O/S: Vista x64
BD Playback: PowerDVD 7.3 BD
TV: Samsung 52" A550 series

Are you using the OEM version or 7.3 Ultimate. Is it just one movie or lots of movies?

as with most issues, make sure you have latest drivers for vid card.

It is the OEM version, patched. Video Card is running up to date drivers.

So far I've only seen it on 2-3 movies so far and then only in darker scenes. Blade Runner probably being the worst it that one scene.

My setup is very similar to yours as you can see in my signature. I don't use my computer as a HTPC, but I have "Blade Runner" and have watched it several times on my desktop monitor without any issues using PowerDVD 7.3 OEM which came with my Blu-ray drive. I can check again as I have updated Catalyst driver a few times since the last time I watched "Blade Runner".

I have a similar rig, using Nvidia 8600GT and a Sony BD drive, along with Vista 32...I'll check it out. Can't be the display, has to be at the source. But I haven't seen anything like what you're looking at.

Thanks for the input guys, let me know what you find out.

Its very subtle, if I wasn't so anal I probably wouldn't have noticed it.
Its really just that first scene, other than that I really didn't see it occur noticeably in the rest of the film.

It's probably just a flaw in my system somewhere (drivers,Pdvd, the BD drive), unless it starts occurring in more films, I'm not too concerned. I watched Sunshine last night which has quite a few dark scenes and did not see this problem. Maybe my rig just doesn't like older films lol.
