I have a Sony BDP-350 Blu ray player hooked up to an Onkyo srs-606 and a Samsung 61 inch DLP TV which is 1080p. I don't remember the model number, but it's about 2 1/2 years old (pre-LED version).
Let's say I'm watching a regular DVD. I know very little about scaling or upconverting, despite reading some FAQs on it. What settings should I use to get the best picture on my TV? I understand that the player can output 1080p, or it can output whatver the native resolution of the disc is. (Is this true?) The Onkyo can upscale to 1080p, but I heard it's not very good at it. The TV itself has its own scaler. It's very confusing. |

I think it depends on which has the better scaler inside.
Out of practice, I would let the scaling be done in this order: 1. Player 2. TV 3. Receiver ....players are pretty good at doing their job, tv's can also do a good job but that's not their main focus. And receivers? well, lets just say id only let a higher end receiver do ANY scaling. For the average receiver, just pass it through. |

The Onkyo can't upscale. At least not to 1080p it has a pass through feature for that high of a resolution. It can up convert but that is not scaling. The difference is up conversion simply allows the image to be output at the displays native resolution, where scaling not only dose that but also improves picture quality and clarity. So to answer your question allow the player to scale, and pass through the Onkyo. Only use the Onkyo to up convert component to HDMI.

in the OP's case, the 606 only scales up to 1080i...his tv is 1080p. So best to let the player upscale.
but again, I would never allow my receiver to upscale...unless it was a high end with a great scaling chip. Otherwise best to let the player do the work. |
