Default Can you pass a cop in the snow if you feel hes driving to slow?

With out getting a ticket? Coming home tonight I got stuck behind one doing 25mph. I have 4 wheel drive and the roads weren't that bad all. I wasn't sure so I suffered behind him for 40 minutes. What took 40 minutes usually takes me 15.

I suppose feasibly you could, but that doesn't make it a good idea. I believe an officer if they so choose can give you a ticket for driving too fast for road conditions regardless of how many MPHs you're travelling.

I mean, you could probably fight the ticket, but it's probably not worth going through all that to save less than a half hour of drive time.

I don't understand why people alter their driving habits (as long as they are good ) simply because a cop is behind you or next to you.

If you are following the speeding limit and driving carefully , there shouldn't be a problem. What's he going to say? This man was caught doing the speeding limit?

If you want to be sure drive just a bit under the speed limit but there shouldn't be a problem.

shouldnt matter, i've passed a cop on a highway before going 10 km/h over the speed limit and didn't get a ticket. but cops usually give a 10km/h leeway on the speed limit, anything over that and they'll pull you over.

I'll pass a cop any day of the week if I'm doing the speed limit. Never pass them if even if you're going only 5 miles over the speed limit. I have had cops pull up next to me on the freeway and motion for me to slow down even if I'm driving 65 in a 60mph zone. In the case of icy road conditions you did the right thing by not passing him. Obviously he/she felt they were driving at the appropriate speed for the road conditions.

I've passed them in rainstorms before and had no problems. But, I have a PBA sticker on my back glass, so as long as I don't do something extremely stupid I'm good.

That wouldn't be a problem where I live.... most of the cops around here drive like idiots...... twenty miles over the limit and most are too lazy to even use their turn signals when they change lanes.

One day my mother in law had a horrible stroke and we were really rushing to the hospital in the next county. On the main road leading from my neigborhood to the interstate, this cop pulled out from a side road right in front of me and cut me off. Then I watched him speed up the road and cut of a few more people while changing lanes.... all without ever using a turn signal. I was speeding (even more than he was)..... and as I passed him I just shook my head at him. He pulled me over and asked why I was in such a hurry. I told him why... and he said "well the speed limit is 45." I said "yeah and you are supposed to use your turn signal when you change lanes." He said "what?" I said " YOU are SUPPOSED to use your turn signal when you change lanes.. OTHERWISE... it is an ILLEGAL IMPROPER lane change." He said "well.... Uhhhh..... I'm on my way to a call and you are trying to race me." I said "I'm not racing you... I'm rushing to the hospital for a medical emergency." He gave me my license back and let me go. As I continued on.... I saw him pull into the precinct. He never was on his way to a call...... he was just in a hurry to end his shift.... it was that time of day. My medical emergency did not turn out so well. My 54 yr old MIL had a major brain stem stroke that all but totally incapacitated her.... it would have killed 99% of people, but she lived because she was so young and fit. She now resides in the nursing home where I work because she requires total care 24/7. I would have done it all over again.... because those last few hours in the emergency room.... before the brain swelling really kicked in..... she was able to really talk probably for the last time in her life. I'm glad I got my wife there in time to be able to have those few hours talking with her mother.

But yes...... a cop can give you a ticket for driving to fast for current road conditions... regardless of how slow you are going..... but that would have been a very tough ticket to make stick if you chose to fight it out.

i live in WI and have passed cops in the snow before. as long as you are driving the speed limit or below and it's not "excessive" for the conditions, you should be fine.

Totally agree. Besides if you did take the ticket to court it would be your word against the officer's and you would probably lose.

And this is the reason why most civilians hate police officers. Also, this is another reason why I cannot stand local law enforcement.

They think that their way is the only way. To hell with everyone else. It doesn't matter what the law truly dictates. It only matters what the officer's interpretation of the law is.

The original poster is not breaking any laws and the "Too fast for conditions" ticket is a meaningless BS ticket that's simply there to increase revenue for the local parasitic government.

Suppose the speed limit was 40 and the original poster was only doing 30? How are you to judge what is safe and what isn't? Just because you're driving a POS rear-wheel drive cruiser doesn't mean it's his fault that his "4-Wheel Drive" vehicle can handle snow better than your car.

To cite him for "TFFC" is total BS! Plain and simple.

Most civilians don't hate police officers. But most people who have had to be "dealt with" by them do.

I don't hate cops...... I come from a law enforcement family and have been around tons of cops all my life. I've seen first hand how much the job changes many of them. I have every respect for good cops.... unfortunately... I also feel the good cops are a real minority.

WHOA, WHOA. No need to be hostile. Trust me when I tell you I don't go and try and make peoples life miserable. The job is tough enough. I like people thats why I do what I do. Myself, I am not a traffic guy. Is it part of my job? Yes, but in the same token I think thats what the highway patrol is for. Do I stop people to "chat" about their driving? Absolutely. Does it mean ticket time? No. I believe in attitude. If you tell me, "OOPS, I goofed", your good. If you want to tell me, "How to do my job and how you pay my salary", save it. Look, I hate writting good, decent hard working citizens tickets but once in a while its necessary. It is, trust me. I'd much rather be hookin and bookin those that deserve it; serving a community I enjoy living in. Those that know me here, know my response was in good fun. The AVATAR by the way is meant to be ironic not symbolic.

In a sense your right, our recruiting efforts are down because the salary isn't where it should be but I am happy to report that my agency has done a fantastic job in the last year "recruiting" levelheaded, bringht and all around good individuals.
