Default New plasma!!!!!!!

Well, I bit the bullet. I decided on the Samsung 58A550. In all honesty, I'm VERY happy with the picture and even more happy with the price, and the mutha of all my concerns overpowered me leaving me happier than happy on the SIZE of the screen.

I am a bit nervous on dealing with samsung. After the debacle that was my DLP, I can only hope I get lucky and do not have any problems with this plasma.

Why did I decide this tv? Well, it was simple (kinda). Screen size was one of the most important things I was looking for. When I looked at the 50", they had a great picture but the size didn't cut it. I was looking at the panny 58" and the Sammy 58", both on the same channel and the picture was basically IDENTICAL. my buddy and I could not tell the difference. The difference was the price. I feel like i got a great deal at 2500 bucks. Minus off my credit and the price was even better.....

It is being delivered Friday. I will know then if I feel I made the right choice. I hope it looks good. I hope it fits and I hope my stand doesn't collapse. DOH

I am PUMPED!!! What movie should I watch first????

Before doing that, calibrate your set. Seriously, even self-calibration using DVE makes a 10x difference from stock settings.

Congratulations! I have a 58" Samsung plasma as well. You'll definitely enjoy it. I'd watch Hellboy 2 first. It's a fullscreen movie and you'll be able to enjoy all 58 inches!

What's a DVE? I have Sound and Vision Calibration DVD. I think the DVE is the video of colors that I can download so i will definitely be using that as a "break-in" tool. I don't want to professionaly calibrate the tv until it moves down in the basement since the lighting will be different down there.

I cannot wait until my basement is complete. For now, tv will remain in my small living room. LOL.

Sounds similar to what you already have.

If that link doesn't work just search for "Digital Video Essentials". There is a Blu-ray version which will allow you to view some of the 1080p test patterns (could also download them online I guess).

You could also check out Avia.

This will get you the best results in my opinion:

1st use DVE to adjust your brightness/contrast settings.
Then use AVC-HD to adjust color/tint settings
Just put sharpness to "0" (or if you must, put it higher to your preference)

I find that the AVC-HD color/tint pattern is much easier to use than the DVE test pattern. Note that the AVC-HD disc can only be played in blu-ray players and you still need the blue-filter which comes with the DVE disc. I find that the brightness and contrast test patterns are much easier to use on DVE.

I've tried this combo on multiple TVs with blu-ray players and I get good results.
