Default Netlix renting defectives?

I have been a Netflix member for more than a year and have been renting mostly blu-ray discs from them. I also have been buying a lot of blu-rays for my collection. Now I don't know this for a fact but I'm starting to think that there is something fishy going on with their blu-ray rentals. What I mean is, I have had a large number of blu-ray defects from Netflix, and in all the time I have been buying I have not gotten a single defect (knock on wood) with one of my purchased discs. I would say that more than 65% of the blu-rays I get from Netflix have some kind of glitches with the picture, pixelation and hangups where I have to fast forward through them. I also have had several discs just refuse to play. Several came up with some kind of copyright infringement message. The funny thing is that when I closely examine these discs they almost never have anything wrong with them that I can see. No scratches or fingerprints or cracks--apparantly nothing wrong. Now I have no actual evidence to back this up other than my experience with their rentals, but I am starting to think that maybe Netflix is purchasing defective discs from the studios at some special rate and renting them and hoping most people won't have a problem with them. I know this may sound crazy but I can't think of any other reason for the disparity between the number of rental defects and the lack of any defects in my purchases. I've had serious glitch issues even with numerous titles that I know I am getting from them as the first viewer of the disc. I understand that the defect rate in blu-ray manufacturing is very high. Could studios be selling Netflix discs they consider to have minor defects to help cut their losses? Has anyone else had similar issues with their Netflix blu-ray rentals? Lets discuss. Maybe there is something going on here.

I've had a number of issues also.....even when it was something brand new releasing on Tuesday that they shipped Monday for me in advance. I've also noticed that the defective discs always appear flawless in condition. Some have looked like dubbed copies to me as well. Makes me wonder if people are switching dupes for original and netflix never even catches it upon return.

With everything saying "long wait" lately I'm just about ready to go back to renting from Blockbuster since their selection has vastly improved at my local store!

I've had a couple regular DVDs come over with scratches and 1 disc didn't play properly but that was almost 2 yrs ago. I also did get a standard DVD of the blu-ray I requested (Close Encounters - they promptly sent a replacement). Be sure to mark them as problem discs on the queue and they will take them out of circulation.

Never had any problems like the OP. I've been with Netflix for more than 5 years now. Of course you get the occasional wrong movie in the slipcase, or one that is so badly scratched that it will not play properly.
With Blu-rays I've had a streak of discs that were all cracked on the outter edge. So I called them and they said that they are aware of the problem, which seems to be an issue with automated mail systems, when the shipping envelope runs through some kind of assembly line and there seems to be too much pressure on the discs... Seems that they kind of got a hold on this as there is an extra (full disc size) sticker on the latest discs, that seems to prevent the cracks somehow.

Anyways, back to the OP.

What kind of player are you using and how is it hooked up to your TV?
I cannot think of any reason you should have problems with copyright infringements just from a "bad" disc.

I have gotten a few defective BDs, one was cracked near the edge, not sure how that happened. Then the other had a really really deep scratch on it, I didn't even try to play it

The thing that makes me really suspicious is when I get a brand new release that is being viewed for the first time, it looks clean as a whistle, yet it pixelates and locks up in places. Like I said in my OP, I have never had this happen with a blu-ray I have purchased.

Every so often, I get a bad BD from Netflix, but no more frequently than I get bad DVD's. I have had one from Netflix that was obviously a bad batch of disks that Netflix purchased. The Curse of the Golden Flower. The first disk and the replacement disk had the same lockup at the exact same spot on both disks, and this happened in two different players. It's impossible to know whether Netflix is buying "seconds" or since they probably buy "lots" they happen to get an occasional bad lot.

Are these Universal titles you are having problems with? There have been many reports with glitches in recent Universal releases. Wanted is one title in particular.

As far as brand new disks, I have had unplayable disks just out of the package that would not play, and I found a big sploogy fingerprint on the sweet surface of the disk. So just cuz it's new, doesn't mean it's clean.

I quit using them when the defect ratio of the dvds were greatly then 80% most were snaped in half or broken in multiple places..

I haven't had any Netflix problems yet. Been using them for about 4-5 months now. Last week I received a blu where the envelope was severely mangled..... but the disc inside was fine. I had to double it up in the same envelope with another movie to send it back.

No problems here with Blus or dvds from Netflix. (Of course now that I say that... I'll get one) I guess I had one glitch with Baraka on Blu but I heard that was common on that particular movie.
Sorry to hear that other subscribers are having issues.

Wow, and I thought it was just a fluke when this happened to me! I've only rented 3 Blu's from netflix, but one of them (Zohan) had skipping/freezing issues during one scene. I examined the disc and there were no visible flaws. Strange...
