Wal-Mart denied rumors that it had placed a substantial order with a Taiwan supplier for ultra-cheap HD DVD players that could swing the format wars in that direction.

A spokesperson for the company said Thursday that reported leak concerning Taiwan-based consumer electronics manufacturer, Fuh Yuan, partnering with TDK in China to manufacture the $250-299 players, had no merit. The report first appeared in AVS Forums, and was picked up by other Web sites.
"The article… was full of inaccuracies and we had no participation in it," the spokesman said in an e-mail to PC Magazine. "Most of the facts, including the purchase, were untrue," she added. "Not sure how it originated."
When asked to comment specifically on a statement appearing on Fuh Yuan's site, which implies the retailer is at least interested in ordering the players, the spokesperson said she could not comment on or disclose Wal-Mart's internal business with suppliers and our orders. However, the supplier said that no deal was imminent.

boy these HD-DVD zealots are just fighting dirty. spreading false rumors just like the Steven Speilberg's movie coming to HD-DVD soon, desperate attempt to get a petition going to convice people HD-DVD has won right before the PS3 comes out... Telling everyone how HD-DVD PQ / audio is superior then Blu-ray when we all know they're the same. They're nothing but a bunch of annoying BSer...

Notice how AVS is rightly singled out as the source for this BS and a bunch of people ran with it? That's a major embarssment and it definitely helps to expose what's been going on there for the past two years or so.

Well, the entities mentioned (Wal-Mart, HD-DVD, the supposed manufacturer) DO exist. So in short, the story didn't make up the store WM. Other than that, it's BS.

I followed the link to avs forum and read some of the replies... It's just hilarious on how the hd dvd group is spinning this... And of course, within 2 mins of me posting my thought, I got called a blu goon or something and got banned.

Why cant they just admit that report was false? Hell the article even named them as the originator of the rumor pretty much, just admit it and move on.

In another forum they are saying how this is bad for BD as well. Too freakin' funny. First the announcement was a slamdunk for HD-DVD and bad for Blu-ray. Now it's as bad for Blu-ray as it is HD-DVD?

As others have stated in the Onkyo thread, these ridiculously low priced phantom players offer no incentive for any reputable electronics manufacturer to join in. Where's the profit? Is the HD-DVD group just going to give away players and then one day start charging for them?

I would not get giddy just yet...

A rumor has to start somewhere. As some have said, its just a matter of time. I would not put it past Crap-Mart to have made/inquired about a deal. They are the LARGEST US retailer. They are not stupid either.

As for playing down the story? Well, thats typical press.

You all are a good group of people, but don't be fooled. The war isn't over and no matter how many buyins each camp has, it won't make a difference. There is something else that will turn the tables and seal the deal.

What is it? We will know soon enough.
