Default Why are Amazon's HD-DVDs still expensive?

I know, I mentioned the forbidden word, but I've noticed on occasion that when I search for a blu-ray on Amazon and the HD-DVD counterpart is still listed (in stock too, i might add) it's still fairly expensive (sometimes even more than the Blu-ray version). Anyone know why Amazon hasn't discounted many of their HD-DVDs? I'd think they would want to get rid of them all, no?

One example, the Troy DC Bluray is 18.99.....HD-DVD is $32

Sidenote: I assume this thread is still considered appropriate for OT. This has nothing to do with bashing HD-DVD or discussing the no-longer-existent format war, just my curiosity of Amazon's pricing.

I'd have to say 'supply and demand'

If they supply is there but the demand is not, then simply put they have to charge more to make money on the stock that they've already paid for.

Sorry, no. Law of supply and demand says that if the demand is greater than the supply, then the price goes up, not the other way around.

But you also have to factor in the fact that they probably bought those HD-DVD's when the price for getting them from the manufacturers was high.

Amazon doesn't want to lose money on something like HD-DVD because they bought into them.

Example: If Amazon bought each HD-DVD for say $20, then selling them for less than $20 would result in Amazon losing money.

As for where the price goes from there, if Amazon want to sell them for higher than what they're worth, that's up to them.

Actually the demand is greater than the supply. A lot of folks bought cheap HD DVD players after the war was over, and now they are searching for HD DVD disc to play in those players along with DVD's. So while we sit here thinking there is no demand for HD DVD, there are alot of folks who supported that format with their ego's, blood, sweat and tears who are going to take their sweet little time going towards Blu.

Pretty cheap around these parts...

Prices I have seen range from £2-8 and I saw the Matrix ultimate box for £18 (which was cheaper than the DVDs!).

HD DVD is pretty import friendly from what I hear.

easy, unlike most stores, on-line stores don't need to care. A retail store has limited shelf space so the faster they get rid of them the better, Amazon can have them on their shelves for ever, so why lose money on them now, maybe one day some idiot will buy an HD DVD player at a garage sale and will want to buy a handful of titles.

no offense but that doesn't completely make sense. it's not like amazon got the hd-dvds for free, they obviously had to buy them from the manufacturer. amazon is in business to make a profit so i dont think it's about them just not needing to care...unless i misinterpreted your point. i guess i understand in that amazon has so many products on their website that are old and/or out of date and still charges a pretty penny for them for the reason that, like you said, they don't have to move the items b/c it's not like they have a limited amount of shelf space. but i'm still confused over the fact that some of the HD-DVDs are actually more expensive than the identical (if not superior depending on audio options or special feaures) blu-rays.

my point is a B&M needs to get rid of the HD DVD ASAP because they take up valuable real-estate, Amazon can hope that someone will go on there get one of the cheaper ones and then say "what the hell, might as well get X as well". If it spends six more months collecting dust, it is not that important, it is not a big ticket item and I am sure that their stock is not that big, they can afford to play a waiting game until some loser with only HD DVD goes on the site and buys it (especially since over time HD DVD will be harder to find elsewhere).

Simple, it's considered "Out of Print" and will never be back in print. If you are trying to find hard to find items, they always demand a higher price. Amazon does this with a lot of out of print books and CDs. It's like second hand gaming stores, if they get a hard to find game like Capcom Vs. Marvel 2, they jack the price up. (I saw it for $80 the other day which made me think of it)

What amazon paid for the hd-dvds assuming they can't return it to the supplier is considered a sunk cost, i.e. totally irrelevant ... or at least it ought to be.

There are some bitter hd-dvd folks who haven't converted to blu-ray .. there's probably less competition for selling hd-dvd as well ... so less price wars.

It is odd, yes. HD DVDs are being cleared out like mad in Canada. Prices range from $4.87 to 6.99 on many, many Warner, Universal and Paramount/Dreamworks titles(Wal-Mart bargain bins were the 1st). Same goes for the UK. Thanks to the great prices in both my country and the UK, I have built up a pretty sweet HD collection for little $. The "duds" are then sold on eBay for pretty much what I originally paid.

I have no idea why. I mean HD-DVDs aren't in demand these days.

Thats what it is, they are no longer manufactured and Amazon is the only one that stocks them as a big name retailer so they set the tone, no competition persay

Whether they sell is a different story
