Default Projector question

I have a friend on another board who posed this question and I don't know too much about front projectors, so I figured you guys were the go-to peeps:

***

I watch my dvd's on a projected image against a wall. It's amazing. It's a WVGA projector (widescreen). I have a 112" view when the aspect ratio is 16:9 (1.85:1).

BUT, some of my older dvds claim on the back to be "widescreen" or 2:35:1, but when I view, they are only widescreen in the 4:3 ratio! This of course renders the image much much smaller than the projector is capable of.

Is there any way I can get the projector to expand the view? And is it possible for it to be 2.35:1 and still in the 4:3 ratio???? Why is it doing this? If it's advertised at 2.35:1, shouldn't it actually BE that?

***

Any thoughts on why this might be?

Why is this happening?

The DVD is apparently not ANAMORPHIC widescreen. I could attempt to explain it, but I'm sure more knowledgeable people than me have written extensively about this subject. Just try Googling anamorphic widescreen dvd, and I'm sure you'll find your answer.

Sorry If my previous post seems like sluffing off your question, but it's late here and I have to get up in the morning to watch the kids. Hopefully it does point you in the right direction, though.

Goodnight!

What happens when he views the "widescreen" material in the 1.77 native ratio of his projector? Does it show up as fullscreen? How is his DVD player set up? It is set up to send images to a 16:9 set or a 4:3 set?

It sounds like he just needs to adjust the aspect ratio settings on his DVD player or on his projector (aka zoom, full, normal, etc) to get the picture that he wants.

im not sure what player you friend has, but i know on ps3, anamorphic widscreen movies play in widescreen(duh) and non anam. only show up in 4:3. adjusting the projector does not help in my case, but instead the player itself must be adjusted to 'stretch' a 4:3 movie.

The DVD is set to 16:9.

The image shows up as widescreen, but WITHIN a 4:3 aspect ratio. It's really weird, isn't it? It usually only happens with dvd's of "older" films, like from the 90's.

(By this I think he means the image is squared off. With black bars on all 4sides, but I'm not quite sure.)

But many DVDs from back then show up as 2.35:1
