What happens when he views the "widescreen" material in the 1.77 native ratio of his projector? Does it show up as fullscreen? How is his DVD player set up? It is set up to send images to a 16:9 set or a 4:3 set?

It sounds like he just needs to adjust the aspect ratio settings on his DVD player or on his projector (aka zoom, full, normal, etc) to get the picture that he wants.
