Default Why not smaller than bigger?

Why do they continue to make media as big they can storage wise, but don't try to make them smaller in physical size. As much as egerly await blu-ray, I would rather see dvd's and cd's at a much smaller size. Somewhat like the new pocket cd's, but with the same storage size as the 5 inch.

Because, why would you try to invent a new format to keep the same quality but in much less place ? It's unviable, uncommerciable ! Tell the people to buy a new player, rebuy the films to just have the exact quality of the DVD ! It's stupid !

I think one of the reasons why the electronics industry doesn't want to make discs any smaller than the CD/DVD size is because of theft. That's most likely why DVD's come in much larger cases than what's needed to hold the disc. Even then they've got up to three security stickers on the outside of the case. Besides, most people are very happy with the size of CD/DVD discs. They're a very convenient size for taking with you to listen to in a car or at a friend's house. If they would have kept LP and LD sizes that would be unfortunate but I personally don't see any real desire by consumers to want smaller discs.

DVD may be going blu-ray (or HD-DVD) for now, but in the future, it may go the way of CD. Movies on a memory chip. Never say never.

Smaller DVD discs and CD discs are already available and eventually I am sure you will see smaller sized BDs. But, the goal is not to put a DVD quality movie on a 2 inch disc. It is to provide a 1920x1080, high-definition disc that the public can actually buy and enjoy on their $5,000+ plasma televisions and home theater projection systems.

MP3 is not a BETTER format than CD audio, but it is a smaller format. It has it's place. Flash memory is expensive, but has it's place, and the size makes it very usable when storage demands aren't high.

But, really, for your home PC or your home theater - why do you need, or even want a disc smaller than the current standard size? Heck, if you made the discs & players smaller, they wouldn't work with your legacy discs, which is definitely a big deal for sales.
