Default Volume a little low on PS3 with Optical Audio

I got a PS3 for Christmas. This replaced my Onkyo DVD player with upscaling to add Blu-Ray to my home entertainment. Overall I am very happy with it, but I have found that the volume from the PS3 running via my Receiver with the optical audio cable a little low. Normally audio volume at about 35 was fine on the previous player. With the PS3 I am finding I need to be between 40-45 on the audio on the same receiver. I am just checking to see if this is common or not with the PSs3 and movies. Thanks for any feedback.

Bill

I know this doesn't directly answer your issue, but is it possible for an HDMI hookup?

While a disc is playing, press the triangle. The on-screen icons, once you move the cursor around, will show you a volume control. Once you raise that, make sure you press the X button or it wont stay in the memory. If things are still a litttle low (movies) that's the nature of the beast. It changed awhile ago.

your issue is not common.

check the levels of your independent channels going out.
ie. center, RR, RB, FR, etc etc.

one PS3 i setup had a low level set for the center channel and the user thuoght the entire volume was low, but it was just the dialogue coming through softer than the surround.

you could also try what DavePS3 said.

Will try setting the volume per instructions. Unfortunately my receiver does not have hdmi connectivity, so I am running the hdmi to the TV, and then the optical audio to the receiver.

* Optical is running directly from PS3 to Receiver. HDMI is connected to TV

Flan, I would just run the optical to the receiver and avoid the middle man unless you REALLY need sound out of your panels speakers.

i advise against changing the volume setting on the ps3. i noticed that raising the volume causes distortion/clipping to the audio. not sure if it is different since you have yours connected via toslink but i would leave the volume at zero.

it actually took me a while to notice it. i used to keep mine at +2 until i popped in the tony bennet blu-ray and i noticed that i was getting distortion, even at low volume. at first i thought my speakers went kaput but i lowered it back down to 0 and it went away. some clipping existed even at +1. i couldn't really notice it while watching movies though...

my setup is an onkyo 605, polk monitor 60 for l/r, polk cs2 center and monitor 30's for surround.

TRying to think of why some are getting this issue. It reminds me of people taking a signal out from their laptops using headphone out, into their receiver, then cranking up the volume on the laptop, raising the volume on the receiver and BANG, dead receiver. Too much current. But this is really odd. The signal is not 'live' like a headphone output so I can't figure out why this would be happening. It's like the gain being up too high on both pieces instead of just one.

it sounds like the ps3 processes the gain too high when you adjust the volume and is causing the clipping to occur. also, though the audio does get louder when you increase the internal ps3 volume, i don't want the ps3 to do any additional processing to the audio and compromise audio quality. not saying that it happens, just a precaution.

Ok.. I got home tonight and adjusted the volume on the ps3. It was right in the middle. When I raised or lowered the volume on the ps3 there was no change that I could hear. Volume only changed if I adjusted on the receiver. I double-checked and my audio on ps3 is set to use the optical cable??
