Arrow Matt Damon Says James Bond Franchise is "Repulsive"

Matt Damon is one of those actors I wish would just keep his mouth shut publicly and make movies. Oh well.

Quote:
Matt Damon loves to share his over-simplistic views on politics and now his hatred for James Bond movies. While speaking to The Miami Herald, Damon said: "They could never make a James Bond movie like any of the Bourne films. Because Bond is an imperialist, misogynist sociopath who goes around bedding women and swilling martinis and killing people. He's repulsive."

Damon added: "The Bond character will always be anchored in the 1960s and in the values of the 1960s. [He's] so anachronistic when you put it in the world we live in today."

While clearly Damon is not a big fan of the Bond franchise, it appears that he is not that big of a fan of the "Bourne" franchise either. He revealed that the only reason he agreed to make the fourth movie is because Universal Pictures put up $125 million for his passion project "The Green Zone," which is based on a harshly critical book about the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. "When you make a $125 million Iraq movie, you kind of owe them a Bourne movie," he said.

I just respect the dude for having the balls to say he doesn't like his own movies, cause if he ripped the bond movies and said his were the absolute best, he'd get crucified. but if he says he is not a fan of his movies either, then the pressure is taken off.

So, the guy who said this, "Bond is an imperialist, misogynist sociopath," is making a movie about this, "the search for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq." Yep, that's gonna be a well balanced and fair look at the subject matter...

Sigh. I like Damon as an actor. But I really wish these movie stars would stop thinking that playing make believe for a living somehow makes them deep thinkers and political geniuses. They know no more about it than the guy who cuts your meat at the deli.

I agree mostly.

I don't think the pressure's off. I do however think that he won't get crucified.
I mean making fun of your own franchise isn't neccesarily a good thing, only in this context it makes sense.
However, he still criticized his own film. People don't like to be told their favorite action hero doesn't even like the movie they're paying $20 to own or $10 to see in the theaters depending on where you live.

I seems he thinks he's smart which might be true, but he like to hear his own voice too much. When people say such things, it's because they feel invincible. Well there are probably a lot of reasons, but I'm sure it has to do with Fame or celebrity or whatever one wants to call it.

He can speak his mind, but he just has to be ready to back it up. Mostly, he should be ready for the fall that is going to hit. It will. Once, actors start believing all the crap that comes out of their mouths, they're already on their way down. Maybe not box office-wise, but mentally they've jumped off the deep end. It'll catch up to him.

At least he's passionate and open about his opinions.

I also don't think he's 100% wrong. Maybe 90% or 80%.

Maybe 'm in the minority but I agree with Matt! With the exception of the last 2 movies, I haven't been a Bond fan since the Connery movies. Celebs have opinions just like everyone else. And we can agree or not agree with them just like we do with everyone else.

The quote doesn't back up the title of the thread, he is saying the Bond character is repulsive. That's different from saying the movies are repulsive. What was the question that was left out of the quote to which he gave that reply? "Matt, what do you think the differences between Bond and Bourne are?" He is probably correct in what he says. Those women's hollywood gossip magazines tend to leave out some of these minor details.

How is anything Damon said any different than any of us here that puts out our opinion on any given subject matter?

Actors like Damon pay taxes, are American citizens and have just as much right to express their freedom of speech as any of us.

I've had a hard time putting into words what it is I like about the Bond character....

"Bond is an imperialist, misogynist sociopath who goes around bedding women and swilling martinis and killing people."

Thanks Matt! That is exactly what I was looking for!

There hasn't been a single "Iraq War II" movie that has made money. Not one, unless you count Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 911. If Universal is going to throw $125 million down the toilet on The Green Zone just to make a 4th Bourne film, that's like adding $125 in negative costs to the Bourne budget before the cameras even roll.

Who said he didn't? Nobody suggested he should be thrown in jail or deported for saying what he said. But just like when we put out our opinions, people have the right to agree, disagree, get angered by, refute, or even ignore what he said. Freedom of speech doesn't mean people aren't allowed to react or respond to what we say. That's what we're doing here. Responding to what he said.

I am a fan of Bond and Bourne films, if Matt Damon says he doesn't like this movie or that movies that's cool. He is entitled to his own opinion. Nothing to be worked up with.
