Default Why cant all games be 1080p?

If ps3 games are put on BD, why are most games 720p. It would make sense to utilize that BD to its fullest. The only thing i can think of is that maybe it cost to much to make them in 1080p. I sure there is a good reason for this...i just dont feel like search for it. Im pretty sure some blu-ray guru can answer this. Thanks

Most games run better in 720p. It take much more processing power to do it at 1080p... They could've made K2 in 1080p, but there wouldn't be as much action on screen probably.

It has to do with programming and utilization of the processors. Having really high res textures, advanced ai, and crazy physics all take up power. Keeping that at 30-60 fps takes up more power. running it at 1080p would be a pita. framerates would drop and it takes longer to code for the extra pixels, or at least id imagine.

It wouldn't take any longer to do the coding; you are spot on about the issue though. It has to do with processing power.

That's not to say there isn't enough power in the PS3 to do it, but efficient code to do it. This is why you see better looking games later on in a console's life cycle. As developers get used to the hardware, they can "squeeze" more out of it.

Games aren't a linear or non-linear series of prerendered stills like movies.

WipEout HD manages 1080p60 because Studio Liverpool used an art style that has relatively simple assets and effects that skillfully combine into a very detailed, mostly sharp looking game. They're also very talented programmers (+ shared Sony engine tech) and had a very long time to optimise the game.

Studio Liverpool also cheated a bit since the game doesn't always actually output in native 1080p (though it does "some" of the time). Regardless, WipeOut HD is still incredible eye candy at all times.

Consider though that a 1080p image takes up more than twice the processing power of a 720p image for only a minimal increase in visual clarity. It also uses up more memory to make the art assets look good, which is something which is at a premium on a home console.

I'm fine with games at 720p for now. We can get all 1080p stuff next generation, after most of the TVs out there can actually accept an HD signal...

Its simply a matter of harder work for the programmers. I don't think the tools are quite up to the job at the moment. The middleware requires quite a big chunk of the processing on its own. The first 1080p games will likely come from Criterion/EA since Renderware is something they can tailor to their hearts content. The games like Burnout are essentially by products that they can sell.

Because it's not a 360, that's why!

I would imagine the porting quality as a lot to do with it. Then again, we see several PS3 exclusives that are only 720p.

As much as i like to poke fun at the 360 I don't really consider it on its own to be the defining reason.

Hardware, tools, disc space, hours of creating new textures.. at a benefit of 0...

Note most games that say they are 1080p are not 1080p..

i've always been under the impression there's 2 reasons for the lack of 1080p games: 1) still early in PS3's life cycle, programmers aren't fluent enough in PS3 programming yet, and 2) multi-platform ports often hold games to the lowest common denominator.

i don't get why home is 720p?

Well, there is a fact that most 360 games upscale to 1080p...and substantially less PS3 games. However, I believe that they all render 720p (give or take a few variations).

The fact that many PS3 exclusives only output to 720p is a prime reason why we shouldn't expect 1080p. The processing power is obviously just not there.

Home isn't great graphically but it has to show a lot, especially now in open beta rooms are always full. There's still room for optimisation but they need to be extra careful there's some juice for future expansions. More graphically taxing toys than the bubble machine for example. Supporting video screens, streaming and other network technologies probably sucks up a lot of resources.

Beg your pardon but here I was under the impression that the PS3 was capable of handling 1080p with all the action and the whole shebang with its so well spoken of Cell Processor ? Could it be that the PS3 is not truly HD capable ?

And by HD I mean Full HD of course.

I don't think you have a clue what you're talking about and haven't even taken in what's already been said, comes across like you're trying to be irritating.
