Exclamation 1080p games

I just went HD (TV and PS3) in February. My Bravia "tells" me what the images on my tv are running on (ie; 720p, 1080p etc.) When playing warhawk (which is supposed to come in @ 1080i) it only came in 720p! When i called customer service they told me I had to shut off the 720p option manually so that i could get 1080i!!! now what kind of sense does this make??? does anyone have this problem and if so do you have to manually shut off 720p through the xmb like me? I find this really foolish considering that a majority of ps3 games are in 720p! who the hell wants to keep switching the resolution everytime they go from a 1080 game to a 720??? hopefully PS can fix this with a patch, because if your tv doesnt "tell you" whats being displayed, your being shorted on true HD!

yes my tv does that too . actually whenever i play a game or a dvd or a bd the ps3 's signal switches from one to another automatically with a slight pause and my tv tells me what changed .

well you got to let the ps3 to recognize the 1080i and 1080p and have the ps3 support it. there should be a section on display settings and make a checkmark right where it says 1080i

This is an ongoing debate in the realm of HD folk. The reason that the system is forcing the image into 720p in the OP's case is because the software programmers are among the group that believe 720p is a better resolution that 1080i. Likewise, there are many out there that believe 1080i is visually superior to 720p. The debate is a long fought one without either side fully giving up their cause (sound familiar??? LOL).

Personally, on my 52" Sony Bravia, I have to say that I much prefer the 720p image to its 1080i version. It's a slightly smoother visual experience, but lacks much of the "picks and humbars" inherent with a 1080i image. Again, I must reiterate that this is just an opinion like so many others out there on both sides. It comes down to a matter of preference for the individual viewer.

Even when you "can" get a 1080p or 1080i signal out of a game, it doesn't mean it's necessarily going to look better than the same game running at 720p (which a lot of games prefer to do).

(1) Some games get lower framerates when you force them into 1080p mode. Marvel Ultimate Alliance comes to mind (I have this title and can confirm). It looks absolutely stunning at 1080p, but the framerate is much choppier - sometimes as little as 10-15 fps. When running at 720p, it's much more consistently at 30fps.

(2) Some games just upscale from a native 720p (or lower!) resolution. As such, you're not really getting anything better image-wise even though the signal is 1080i or 1080p. Call of Duty 4 is one such example; it renders internally at 600p.

Specifically in the case of Warhawk, it runs natively at 720p. Even forcing it into 1080i or 1080p (which you can do), doesn't improve the image quality unless your TV is native 1080p and a poor internal upscaler.

Haven't you seen 'The Cable Guy'???

"Picks and Humbars" refers to various visual anomolies that appear during video playback. I just got lazy so that I didn't have to type out a list. A few examples are... colour bleeding, grain/white specs on dark/black backgrounds, and artifacting (yes, I've noticed this a few times on 1080i resolution but not on the same materials 720p resolution feed), etc.

That is very accurate. You did a great job explaining this (the rest of this is for the OP).

As for the OP settings, just unselect ALL display options except 1080p (the 480 option is grayed out). That will make sure you get the max. resolution from your games, if your games gives you options other than 720p. If the game only plays at 720p, that's what your input signal to your TV will say (even if all you have checked in your display settings is 1080p).

BTW, your TV automatically upscales ALL input signals to it's native resolution (1080p). The TV just doesn't tell you that. It's just sharper when your source image is a higher NATIVE resolution. Their is an article under the USEFUL THREADS sticky that talks about the different between native resolution and supported resolution. It should help you out greatly!

Warhawk is a 720p game, so it makes sense to have it display at its native resolution of 720p and have your display scale it to 1080p. If your tv has a crappy scaler (no worries on yours, sonys have awesome scalers), then you would try to get it to a res closer to the native res of your display if you can.

I thought that's, basically, what I said. Whether you want to or not, your TV WILL display in it's native resolution. So, it's better to have your source material closest to your TV's native resolution. In other words, 1080p signal to 1080p TV will be the sharpest image (all other things being equal).

My TV upscales well, but it doesn't deinterlace well (like most TVs don't).

PS3 do same in BD-movies. I uncheked 1080i and 720p. It give me 480. So I uncheked only 1080i(Which my display won't support).
