Brad Peyton is close to making a deal to direct New Line and Walden Media’s Journey to the Center of the Earth 2, and Brendan Fraser will reportedly not be starring in the sequel. Deadline reports the studio is moving ahead with the film, with Josh Hutcherson as the star. Hutcherson played the nephew of Fraser’s character in the original. The original film made $242 million worldwide, and without Fraser, New Line would have to back the film with a much lesser-known actor. Fraser left the film due to scheduling conflicts that made original director Eric Brevig unavailable and forced New Line to replace him with Brad Peyton, the director of Warner Bros.’ upcoming Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore. Brevig’s next film will be Yogi Bear. New Line is planning on a Fall 2011 release for the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel.

Of course with the project still being put together and Fraser’s recent movie Furry Vengeance not exactly lighting up the box office, there is still a chance he could return for the sequel. More as we hear it.

With a decent critical reception, $240 million box office take worldwide and tons more in the bank from from the back-end (home video and TV deals, etc.), it was clear that New Line would be pushing for a sequel to the family-friendly hit, Journey to the Center of the Earth. Unfortunately for fans and the studio, we found out back in May that star Brendan Fraser may not return for the sequel, now titled Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.

At the time it was thought that Fraser may not be back due to the director change, having taken part in the first Journey to the Center of the Earth in large part due to the involvement of Eric Brevig who won’t be back for the sequel. Now it’s being reported that Fraser’s schedule is too busy and that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will take over as the lead for the sequel.


The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog has the exclusive that Dwayne Johnson is in negotiations to star in the film and is expected to sign later this week. Josh Hutcherson, who starred in the first film as Fraser’s nephew, will be back to reprise his role as young Sean Anderson and Johnson will step in as a new character, playing the boyfriend of Hutcherson’s mom. Johnson will be one of four new characters added for the sequel and actors will be announced shortly for those roles.

The story will follow Sean Anderson (Hutcherson) as he travels to an island to search for his missing grandfather. Of course, this island isn’t your typical landmass filled with typical creatures and Johnson is forced to tag along. It’s another family-friendly adventure for the ex-wrestler.

Journey to the Center of the Earth made big bank advertising itself as a 3D family adventure before Avatar changed the 3D landscape and made studios go 3D for all of their movies. The sequel will do the same and will be shot in 3D. I wonder if Fraser will have a cameo?

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island begins shooting in October for a September 23, 2011 release date.

I WAS going to say that the original JttCotE was one of the 00's first live-action 3D's not to be a CGI kiddy movie and unconverted, and still remains one of the few that took the time to do 80's-style "gimmicks", thinking that everyone else would--With Avatar getting the directors all snooty about it, you don't know how refreshing it is to see someone actually sink to throwing a glass of water at the camera.

But then we got the Cats & Dogs 2 idiot, who every studio executive now thinks is the guy who "killed off" 3-D, so that confirms the thumbsdown --
My suspicions were first raised by basic EricJ rule of cinema 3A: Beware of any movie that automatically assumes we were all making cool "abbreviations" of the title. ("Journey 2"??)

Longs he keeps balancing, fine. If we have to go on another stretch of YEARS while he churns out kids films, I'm going to be disappointed. I sincerely hoped Faster and FF5 represented a turning point for him career wise.

That said, I totally understand why he would want to keep raking in fat checks doing kids fare for Disney. Not a bad living at all.

The cast is coming together for Journey 2: The Sequel You Might Not Be Keen to See. (OK, the actual subtitle to the Journey to the Center of the Earth sequel is The Mysterious Island.) Josh Hutcherson, returning from the first film, will be joined by Dwayne Johnson, and now Michael Caine will play the grandfather of Hutcherson’s character.

If you remember the story synopsis from when Johnson’s involvement was announced, you’ll recall that the script is loosely based on the Jules Verne novel The Mysterious Island and that Johnson and Hutcherson journey to a mystical island in search of the grandfather.

So, as THR says, this isn’t a cameo, and it’ll even see Caine in full-on athletic mode. Or something close to it. He’ll be in “several chase sequences,” one of which involves giant bees.

And those bees will be in 3D, naturally. Brad Peyton directs from a script by Richard Outten and Brian and Mark Gunn. The shoot (in Hawaii and North Carolina) starts in October.

To recap some details about the Jules Verne novel on which the story is vaguely based: Verne’s The Mysterious Island follows five prisoners of war who who escape the Confederate-controlled city of Richmond, Virginia via hot air balloon. They crash land on a volcanic island east of New Zealand. Eventually the group finds a castaway on a nearby island, and has to deal with his former pirate crew. There are more secrets on the island, including one that harkens back to Verne’s earlier novel featuring Captain Nemo and the Nautilus.

Difficult to say, then, exactly how the plot of the novel will be adapted to the film. The first guess is that the search for the grandfather puts Hutcherson and Johnson on the ‘mysterious island,’ and sees the grandfather standing in for the nearby pirate castaway.

I enjoyed Brandon Fraser in the first one, I hope he didn't pass on this movie to make Furry Vengeance 2...

I had to shake my head in disappointment when I saw that trailer. Brendan Fraser is a good actor; he just chooses the silliest roles

I think Dwayne Johnson has a very good sense of comedic timing. Hopefully the story and script are good.

Vanessa Hudgens Joins Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Vanessa Hudgens will play the female lead in New Line/Warner Bros.' Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to Journey to the Center of the Earth.

Brad Peyton is set to direct the movie, also starring Josh Hutcherson, Dwayne Johnson and Michael Caine. In "Journey 2," Hutcherson and Johnson's characters are forced to go a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather (Caine).

Hudgens plays a Pacific Islander who gets swept into the adventure.

Filming is scheduled to start in late October in North Carolina and Hawaii.

I have not seen a performance from her so I do not know how good this news is. I suppose Sucker Punch will be an indicator.

Kristen Davis Will Journey 2: The Mysterious Island

Kristin Davis, best known for her lead role in the "Sex in the City" films and series, has signed on for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, reports Deadline. Davis will play the female lead and mother to Josh Hutcherson's character, acting opposite Dwayne Johnson. The film is also set to star Michael Caine and Vanessa Hudgens. "Journey 2" is currently shooting in Hawaii and is planned for release in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D.
