I kinda like this Film. But just “kinda.” I love this Period of American Music - the Brill Building/1650 Broadway version of Tin Pan Alley. The Writers were some of the most Amazing Creators in Popular Music History, and because of that, I've read most every book on the Period and the Work created in these Buildings.
I really wanted to like this film more, but it's so uneven and absurd in places, that sometimes it makes it hard to even accept it as a Parody. In terms of the Historical Incidents, some of these events happened to Carole King, some happened to Ellie Greenwich, and some happened to Cynthia Weil and likely others... then there are "Things" that are so far-afield of "Reality," that the film starts to feel more like a Farce, than someone trying to make a serious film. When "Brian Wilson" commits suicide, I wasn't sure what to think or feel. It seemed to me like a scene from Police Squad. Part of me wanted to Laugh because of the absurdness of it all... and another part of me wanted to cry... and not because I felt sad for the character. I'm surprised this film even received a review here when the Reviewers ignore wonderful films like "The Milagro Beanfield War." I'm curious what Others might think and/or Feel. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brill_Building Last edited by albabe; 01-23-2021 at 12:57 AM. |
