I have a onkyo 705 with a 7.1 system. My question is I have my centerspeaker set at +6db,and the left and right speakers set at +2db. In addition, the 4 remaining surround speakers are set at +5db. I was wondering is this a good configuration? And if not what is a good volume that you would use?

That is up to your hearing, and what it sounds like in your soundfield. Personally I don't like to mess with the way the audio was mixed all that much so for me(6.1), fronts 0, center +1, surrounds +2, back 0. But that is just me.

I would personally adjust down and raise the master volume higher, in case boosting the levels causes distortion on peaks. It depends on your receiver though.
In your case, why not set the L/R speakers to +0, the centre to +4 and the surrounds to +3? Then just raise the master a little and you're in the same situation. This is assuming you're level-matching with a sound meter, of course. Last edited by Squozen; 01-30-2009 at 06:06 AM. |

If you are not experienced in the use of test & measurement gear, you may want to use the automatic room setup. That will match the speaker levels as much as possible, across the frequency range (timbre matching) & set the distance (timing) and crossover points as well. Then fine tune, only as necessary, to correct obvious errors.
