will a bluray bought from japan play on a USA PS3?

Japan and America share the same Blu-ray Region (Region A).
They have a different DVD Region (US - Region 1, Japan - Region 2).

Any Japanese Blu-ray release will play on a US player.

Both Japan and the US are Region A as far as Blu-ray is concerned, so you should be able to play that BD.

Region 1 refers to DVD playback only. (And Japan is Region 2.)
