Hi all! I'm new here and any help would be appreciated. I'm building my first home theatre piece by piece and have never bought or set up a receiver before. Here's what I plan on hooking up to it:
5.1 Polk RM6880 speaker system Samsung LN52A750 LCD TV Panasonic DMP-BD35 Blu-Ray player Nintendo Wii My budget is around $500. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Panny DMP-BD35 can decode all of the HD audio internally, so I don't need a receiver with all of the HD audio support? I'd like to upgrade to 7.1 in the future as well without buying a new receiver. Simple setup would be a plus too. Thanks! |

Denon 2308CI will give you LPCM but not DD THD and DTS HD. It is an awesome receiver and at $479 its a steal. Or if you want this Pioneer Elite 91 is a steal too at $498. It has HD decoding, but you don't have to use it..... Those would be my choices.

Thanks! I'm looking into reviews on the Denon and it seems like a great choice. Another silly question: I want to hook up my Wii to the reciever via component cables. Will the output signal to the TV go through the HDMI cable, or will I need a second set of component cables to go from the receiver to the TV?

The Onkyo 606 is a great entry level receiver, and it decodes all of the HD audio types in case you ever change BD players. It has 4 HDMI inputs and will upconvert all of the analog inputs for HDMI output. It upscales to 1080i. I think it can be found right now for around $350.

The Onkyo 606 does seem to get recommended a lot around here; I'll check it out too. More noob questions...do I need to worry about the impedance on the speakers (they're 8 ohm) matching the specs on the receiver? I've tried reading the Home Theater Virgins sticky on this but I can't wrap my head around it. Do I only need to worry about this if I'm doing parallel or series wiring with an amplifier? I just don't want to fry my new system!

Good to know. Ironically I've been checking reviews for the recievers you all recommended and I stumbled across the Denon AVR-789, which I've actually seen in stores here. There's not much selection around here and even though I could buy online, I'd rather see it hands-on first. So thanks for your guys' and gals' help, in a roundabout way!

I've read reviews that say they can be tough to set up
