Tom Savini, geek or god? Is he the best make-up man who ever lived? A bad actor and make-up genius. A combination, or none-of-the-above?

To me he is the greatest special F/X make up artist to ever grace the industry.

As an actor, meh I can't say I've really seen him "act" just small parts here and there.

I will also say I LOVE his version Night of the Living Dead better than Romeros.

For me, the best answer to your question would be: He's a great horror film celebrity.

Tom Savini is a very talented man, but more of a celebrity than a true make-up artist. Two things that set him aside from his peers is he had better technology than those before him and he acts in many of his fims.

While I love Savini and seeing him pop up in horror films, he's no better than Jack Pierce, Dick Smith, or Lon Chaney. In fact, if it wasn't for them there wouldn't be a Tom Savini.

I don't mean to dismiss his great talents. Anyone who has seen his busts of Universal horror monsters knows how great an artist he is. The thing to remember about Savini is you only remember him because you can put a face to the name, something Dick Smith and Jack Pierce don't have.

Well, if you're going by strict definitions, he technically wouldn't be a "geek", seeing as he doesn't try to monopolize Internet forums as his own private poll-enabled vanity-blogs, and then think he's the Darling of the Hot 20 as he tries to lead every single reply in Fascinating Group Discussions about how attention-grabbing his opinions are...

(...Maybe if we had a looser definition of "geek", perhaps, but as it is, the bar's been set a bit too high.)
