I like the new 80gig. Any 80gig with a model number CECHK01 is a pretty decent one. The fans have a higher pitched hum to them but I think are quieter than the80gig with a model number CECHL01. That model still has deeper fans, but to my ear seemed louder due to the lower pitched hum. I've had two CECHK01, the first one which I was completely happey with. (It took a little while longer for the fans to kick in than my current CECHK01) This second one, well like I said, the fans kick in on it right away. But with a lower room temperature I had over the weekend(window open, I like my room 65 degrees), it took about the same, so that might be one variable. All three models I've had stayed very cool and didn't get hot to the touch. There is hot air blowing out of the unit obviously, but not like the 60gig my uncle has who lives in Utah. I've been please overall with no problems yet. Then again I use it mostly for watching blus. I've left it on for a lord of the rings marathon...all day pretty much, stayed cool and the fans barely kicked into this so called "second" gear. But you still had to listen for it. But I would go for a new one...and no there not like the old 40gigs. Trust me, I did my research. They have the new 65nm chips where the old 40s had the 90nm chip. BUT on chips and all that, they're releasing one this fall with a 45nm chip. The smaller the chip, the more efficient it can run, and it won't produce as much heat.
EDIT: I returned the first one to get the deal off amazon: Buy select Blu-ray player and 4 Blu-ray movies and get a hundred dollars off. The first one was quiet like crazy and I still wish I had it. That thing was on for the first four days I had and at six hours at a time, and it didn't spin up the fans or anything. The second one I still have. The third was an experiment to see if the second one I got from amazon was indeed louder than the first one. This third one was louder. So if your going for how loud it runs during movies...It just depends which one you pick out. Last edited by Audiophile_At_Birth; 02-03-2009 at 03:13 PM. |

I've had my 60GB since Nov 06 and I use the heck out of it every day.
I have extended warranty till Nov 09 but I hope it doesn't fail till the extended warranty expires (I don't want to deal with the warranty at this point.) I'm hoping that the laser in mine will chug along for a few more years then I'll replace it and it will be as good as new again. I use the SACD feature that the older PS3's have that has been removed from newer models. I also pick up PS2 games occasionally used for a few dollars and they upconvert and play nicely. (I never owned a Ps2 or original Playstation.) -Brian |
