I like the new 80gig. Any 80gig with a model number CECHK01 is a pretty decent one. The fans have a higher pitched hum to them but I think are quieter than the80gig with a model number CECHL01. That model still has deeper fans, but to my ear seemed louder due to the lower pitched hum. I've had two CECHK01, the first one which I was completely happey with. (It took a little while longer for the fans to kick in than my current CECHK01) This second one, well like I said, the fans kick in on it right away. But with a lower room temperature I had over the weekend(window open, I like my room 65 degrees), it took about the same, so that might be one variable. All three models I've had stayed very cool and didn't get hot to the touch. There is hot air blowing out of the unit obviously, but not like the 60gig my uncle has who lives in Utah. I've been please overall with no problems yet. Then again I use it mostly for watching blus. I've left it on for a lord of the rings marathon...all day pretty much, stayed cool and the fans barely kicked into this so called "second" gear. But you still had to listen for it. But I would go for a new one...and no there not like the old 40gigs. Trust me, I did my research. They have the new 65nm chips where the old 40s had the 90nm chip. BUT on chips and all that, they're releasing one this fall with a 45nm chip. The smaller the chip, the more efficient it can run, and it won't produce as much heat.

EDIT: I returned the first one to get the deal off amazon: Buy select Blu-ray player and 4 Blu-ray movies and get a hundred dollars off. The first one was quiet like crazy and I still wish I had it. That thing was on for the first four days I had and at six hours at a time, and it didn't spin up the fans or anything. The second one I still have. The third was an experiment to see if the second one I got from amazon was indeed louder than the first one. This third one was louder. So if your going for how loud it runs during movies...It just depends which one you pick out.

I've had my 60GB since Nov 06 and I use the heck out of it every day.

I have extended warranty till Nov 09 but I hope it doesn't fail till the extended warranty expires (I don't want to deal with the warranty at this point.) I'm hoping that the laser in mine will chug along for a few more years then I'll replace it and it will be as good as new again.

I use the SACD feature that the older PS3's have that has been removed from newer models. I also pick up PS2 games occasionally used for a few dollars and they upconvert and play nicely. (I never owned a Ps2 or original Playstation.)

My 60 gigger turns 2 this month and I've never had a single hiccup--not one. Never a game freeze, never a movie skip. And I play that thing (either something off a disc or the HDD) every single day.

My advice for anyone who can wait is to wait until April. Thats when the newer 45nm chip PS3s are supposed to arrive. They'll use smaller chips and thus use less electricity, and generate less heat, both of which I assume would help with reliability.

Also by then, there might be a price cut. Im waiting for these ps3s (although im not holding my breath about the price cut) before I buy my 2nd.

I recommend if anything purchasing the replacement laser for only $60 as the majority of issues with PS3s is the laser dying which is replaceable. Look near the last page of my replacement thread with a link from a reliable Ebay seller with available lasers.
Yeah That's what I meant actually a replacement laser. I love my 60, never given me any issues but I'm seeing a lot of 60 owners now saying that their PS3's ar starting to act werid. I'd go crazy without my PS3. I use it on a daily basis.

I think it really does depend on how you take care of the ps3. If you never clean it and have it in a closed environment it will be more likely to fail on you than being in an opposite environment. All the PS consoles I've had since launch have never failed on me.

i've read taht call of duty 4 and GTA are murder for the "MSG"80GB lol

because those are 2 games that needed heavy patching right at the time the said console was released.

the reason it's the best one is because it has the most features compared to any other PS3 release, and it was the final form of the 90chip and taht was engineered to perfection.

you in particular probably got one of those repackaged motorstorm PS3s, to look like a MGS4 bundle. PS forums have seen some complaints for those.

Was there a big difference between the Motorstorm 80Gig systems and the MSG4 80Gig systems? I have the Motorstorm version and I'm just curious about it. So far I've had no problems.

Also, I have yet to clean mine out (short of just wiping dust off of the exterior of the console). I know the manual suggests using a 'low power vacuum' to clean the dust out of it. Does anyone know what exactly they mean by 'low power'? I want to get something that will do the job while not being more powerful than it should be.

The laser in my Motorstorm 80GB died and I have known others with the same issue.

With low power I think that they don't want you to use a vaccum that would be used in an 'Industrial' environment that could suck the motherboard through the disc slot, lol.

Hmm.. that's not good. Well, so far mine has been fine. Here's to hoping it continues to be fine.

Ah, I see. Okay, so if I were to use the regular vacuum cleaner that I have at home now to vacuum to floor, using the hose attachement that goes with it, that should probably be fine?
