Default Are you a "Movie Snob?"

Movie Snob:
The way you can tell if someone is a movie snob is by asking them what they like to do in their spare time. If they say "movies" they are normal people. If they say "film" they are movie snobs. Movie snobs are the kind of people who go see a movie like Spiderman and then whine that it's unrealistic because there's no way a real person could get bit by a spider and be able to fly from building to building.
You can usually find movie snobs posting 1000 messages a minute on imdb.com trying to make themselves look smarter than other people and telling everyone else they are using bad grammar. Chances are they are in their mid-20s, don't have jobs, and live in their mom's basement. They might try to make independent movies but don't realize that everyone else thinks their movies are terrible

Personally, I joke all the time and call myself a bit of a Movie Snob...doesn't bother me in the slightest. BTW above is from the Urban Dictionary.

I would have to disagree with that definition, because I don't consider films "movies". I watch films. If that makes me a movie snob according to their definition then so be it.

I consider myself one but don't quite live up to that definition.

It's a little extreme i'll admit, but not far off either!

Perfect example of "Movie Snob," check out "Filmgeek" (also a GEM!)

Film is the material inside a camera used to capture images and sound.
Movies are those images projected on a screen for our viewing.
I dont actually watch the film, I watch the projected image.

What about me?

Me as movie snob?

Yes. I guess so.

What's the criteria? The quote from above?

.....

Wait... no. I would say film enthusiast. Not snob. A snob is intractable. I am not.

No not exactly. Film is what is shot with yes, but films are the real term and not "movies"

Movies are a relatively new term that has come about recently. The term films have been around since the beginning of film in the early 20th century.

Sorry. You are quite wrong. From the dictionary....

Main Entry: mov·ie
Pronunciation: \ˈmü-vē\
Function: noun
Etymology: moving picture
Date: 1911
1: motion picture
2plural : a showing of a motion picture

As you can see, the showing of a motion picture is called a movie, and THAT is what you watch.

No, I am not wrong.

Yes, I am well aware of what a motion picture is. Everything you see on the screen is a picture and what produces the image is moving pictures.

However, I am not wrong. I am in the business and they don't refer to films as "movies".

They refer to them as films.

Because you're in the business, that makes you less-right.

Come on folks. It's semantics isn't it?

Okay then. Who named this movie?

Someone outside of the business?

My point is, it's a non argument.

Guess I'm not a movie snob, at least not in the sense implied by the maker of this thread. I would not attack something normally impossible when it is the basis of a story. But I would criticize when the story has inconsistencies.

For example I would not criticize Superman cause his powers are not realistic from a human point of view, but I would if for instance in one scene he lifts up an impossible weight of say a mountain and in another if he has a hard time, say bending thick iron bars. If we follow the logic that he has enough strength to lift the weight of a mountain then bending bars which would require less strength should not seem hard for him.

Just a crazy meaningless example but I think you get the idea of what I mean.
