While interesting, what we really need is a 50GB Player for $200.

This would be the FIRST BLU-RAY RECORDER TO BE RELEASED OUTSIDE JAPAN (asuming no one gets ahead of them).

Such great news.

Some pretty serious storage. They haven't produced a machine yet. Lets hope they get it right the first time out.

Can someone explain to me how does that thing work? You record from TV or some other source on those 1000G storage and then it can burn BDs from stored material?

I have not read the release, but this will probably not come down in price, it will be a specialty product for IT (backup etc.). There is a major demand for massive data backup, and this is the market they are probably trying to tap.

If it works like it works for Japanese BD recorders, yes. The Japanese models are more advanced though, with dual decoders.

It allows for two video sources to be recorded.

The trend is being able to record a couple weeks of 24/7 programming. I saw one unannounced design that had something like 5 tuners and 2TB HDD.

On a side note, I'm pushing manufacturers that include a HDD to allow ability to make managed copy of a movie while it plays, and later be able to stream that copy over the home network to the HDTV.

If you could make that happen, I might name my first born after you!

1TB hard drive may sound like a lot, but this is High Def. A 1TB HDTV DVR should be equivalent to a 100GB SDTV DVR in recording time.

A bluray recorder is to copy the program that is stored on the DVR to a disc media. BD-R drives are probably not fast enough to burn movies on the fly. A DVR equiped blu-ray recorder also alows you to watch your movies before you record them to disc. This way you don't waste discs on shows you don't like.
