It looks like GM is going to cut Saturn, Pontiac, Hummer, and Saab and stick with Chevy, Cadillac, GMC, and Buick. I'm a bit surprised they are keep GMC since it is mainly large trucks and SUVs. The article doesn't mention if some Saturn and Pontiac models would be picked up by the brands that are being kept. A separate Forbes article says Pontiac would be reduced to 1 or 2 models, and they are going to try and sell Hummer and Saab.

Interesting. One report I saw had Pontiac going down to 4 models which oddly included the Aussie G8, although I saw production of the G8 as potentiallye getting cut from 10K to 1K cars.

Unfortunately, without substantial overhaul of retiree benefits and UAW wages/benefits/etc., nothing much will improve for any of the Big 3. These "negotiations" with the UAW are simply ridiculous, in my opinion. The Big 3 just need to state that as of ______ date, all retirees will now be required to contribute $X for their healthcare benefits, UAW wages will be cut at the same levels as those for the salaried workforce as will headcount and all employees (salaried and UAW) will now be required to pay a percentage of their healthcare benefits (if they aren't already). If this doesn't happen, then bankruptcy is around the corner. What would you rather have: A job that is still considered good wages and benefits or the very real possibility of no job (or one at a substantially reduced pay/benefit level)? Wake-up, Detroit.

Pontiac was decent in the 90s when the Grand Am and Grand Prix were popular. My first 2 cars were actually Pontiacs, a Sunbird then a Sunfire. I'll admit neither were great but I actually liked the Sunfire. I wouldn't dream of buying one now but it wasn't a bad car for a 16 year old.

Not sure about Hummer having a good rep. All of their vehicles are horribly oversized gas guzzlers. I would assume they would still be making military Hummers though.
I read a while back that Buick is a huge car brand in China and other foreign countries and that is why it was guaranteed to stay. |

They've been trying to sell Hummer for about a year. It's a good idea. If someone buys it they would have a good hold on a niche market and it could be quite viable for them. Best way for this to work would be an independent owner of Hummer that sells through GM dealers. Gives the Hummer brand owners multiple dealers and likely low royalties to GM. GM will practically give the Hummer brand away for cash and no strings attached.
Just an idea of course. Sticking to Chevy and GMC is a smart move. They are the staples, and even in today's market millions of people want large trucks and SUVs. If I couldn't get a large pickup truck from GM, I don't know what in the world I would drive... ...Dodge? ![]() And Ricshoe, great first post. I couldn't agree with you more. |

Saturn is still up for review. As of last week there were plans to fund it through 2012 but reduce the models down to 3 with no new models being produced in that time. That's basically killing it anyway, but at least they'll get a wind down period and allow dealers to restructure. Otherwise they'll have to buy out the dealers which will be very costly.
Nothing is final on any of these deals. We'll have to wait and see what the gov says about their plan and what the conditions are. The UAW is still the biggest thorn in the auto industry and until that is removed I don't see the US auto industry ever recovering. |
