Default BD - The Future Of Movies

Have a few concearns/questions here..

I have been reading reviews on BD movies and there are quite a few titles that did NOT transfer well. IE, Full Metal Jacket, National Lampoons Christmas Vacation, A Christmas Story, Fifth Element - etc etc..

What are the plans for these movies by the studies? Is that it? Were stuck with this junk? Are they going to re-release later on? I mean, whats going to happen? I feel like I get to pick from left overs here.

We are talking about the NEXT GEN format - HD - the format that is suppose to knock your socks off.. yet.. we have these crap titles.

It has probably been discussed over and over - but what is going to happen? Studios are switching encodeing formats mpe2 to VC-1 and then you have the audio tracks changing over and over..

Perhaps maybe there will be a standard? Maybe they will re-release?

Any ideas?

Some movies may get new transfers after restoration work. Some movies just look that way on the neg and can't be improved upon.

Re-releasing with better transfers depend on the studio, the importance of the film to society and its cult status.

The poorer titles have less to do with the capabilities of the films look than inferior mastering practices. The Fifth Element has already been remastered and is being prepped for re-release. It's unclear whether or not Sony will offer a trade-in option for those that bought the original version. But last I heard, it sounded like they probably would.

That said, it's not likely we'll see the same courtesy extended to most inferior releases until the format is selling high enough numbers to justify the effort. TFE has always been something of a show piece for Sony, which is probably why they went ahead and remastered it now. But, as low as sales are at this point, it doesn't pay to do many re-releases, which is why it's important more studios adopt Sony's current recipe of evaluating the elements better before releasing to BD/HD as well as maximizing the releases in other ways, like more popular director's cuts.

Every studio has had their share of disappointments and Sony is the only one that's truely shown that they've learned from the what are essentially growing pains or a learning curve that has to be extended to any new technology, and care enough about their properties to not settle. At least that's what they've shown so far this year. Of course Sony has more incentive, as they've got more at stake than any other studio supporting high def.

It's been confirmed by Paidgeek that T5E is re-released this year by Sony. Things will be better down the line, but just keep in mind, we are early adopters still at this time, so the studios are still finding their way around HD optical discs.

edit: looks like Chad beat me to it.

So in a few years, Blu-ray movies are going to look better?

I just read this on TheDigitalBits:

Still not done with Warner: Some HD-DVD copies of The Ultimate Matrix Collection (due in stores next Tuesday) will come packaged with a pamphlet promoting the forthcoming high-def release (in both formats) of Blade Runner and a number of Stanley Kubrick films including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket and the unrated Eyes Wide Shut. All are expected before the end of the year.

Seems like FMJ will get the "Fifth Element" treatment.
