Question BR Movies - Future Prices?

It appears that most new titles arrive priced between 29.99 and 34.99 before discounts by Amazon and others.

What do you expect prices to be in the future? i.e. in three years will new releases be cheaper?

I remember when new DVD releases were quite a bit higher than they are now.

What about older titles? Could we see some 9.99's 5-10 years from now?

Curious to hear your ideas.....

It's possible. Like DVD when it debuted, the problem now has both technical and economical aspects. Since the production methods are still quite new, the machinery and everything needed for production is still costly, like buying a computer with all the best components. As the methods are refined, as well as what is needed for the method, production will become more cost effective, like it did with DVD.

Also, with economics, it is well known among people who buy BRs and HD DVDs that production is more expensive, compared with DVD, so putting the prices up a little bit just gives them a bigger profit since most people attribute the higher price to only the technological side. This might not be too much, but it still attributes to the price.

One thing the above paragraph does to strike a blow to HD DVD is that the HD-DVD camp touts the less costly production, yet their movies are about the same price as BR in stores. If they cost less to make, they could sell them for less, attracting more people, but they're being greedy, showing they don't even know how to properly wage the war. (Microsoft could have killed BR if it put the HD-DVD drive on the 360 when it debuted, with HDMI. I would have been buying HD-DVDs for a year before the PS3, and many other people would have, too.)

Now you can buy DVDs between $10-20 anywhere, and the $10 ones still don't lose the businesses money, so you can see that DVDs are still inflated in the price for profits.

Pricing is usually proportional to market acceptance. So, yes, BD will come down over time, as it starts to cut into the DVD market. That said, with the exception of first time on video releases and Fox titles, it's pretty competitive already. But, retailer discounting isn't proportional to DVD yet, since it's not selling at the same volumes. DVD has also sometimes been advertised at a loss, just to get people in the store. BD isn't where, it alone will pull in a lot of shoppers on every Tuesday of the month. But, if the war doesn't drag out, it'll get there.

BTW, I pre-ordered The Terminator BD online for only about 11.00 brand new from a popular etailer. So, retailer discounting isn't foreign to BD. It's just not common yet. On DVD it's generally proportional to the sales expectations of the release. For example, the DVD for Star Wars Episode III might be advertised at 14.99 during release week at BB or CC. But something like My Life Without Me, would still be selling for 19.99 or 24.99 during release week, despite identical SRPs and a single disc as opposed to a dual-disc release of SW.

Fox appears to be pricing BD for the same market as some of their 2-3 disc DVDs, which are also 39.99 SRP. They'll come down once BD has grown past the early adopter market or they realize that such is hurting sales. You can ffind a lot of posts from people that are holding off buying Fox titles that aren't absolute must haves for them, until the prices drop, which is inevitable. I'd guess it'll happen early next year if not sooner. But, that's just a guess based on DVD price drops.

Though as prices drop due to consumer acceptance, promotions like buy one get one free and how you can get so many titles free from buying a player, those will dry up.

I have more Fox titles than any other studio in my rack. There would be more if they were priced better. Windtalkers was selling for $44. at Future shop. I'd like it but I have no intention of throwing that kind of money around for an average movie. I know I can get it cheaper elsewhere but come on. Being an early adopter doesn't mean made of money.

Thunderhawk, just noticed your sig. You forgot MGM as a BD exclusive. The Bond films alone make that a huge point. I'm not sure Weinstein can be considered neutral just yet though. Technically Weinstein only supports HD DVD. But their distribution/partner company, Genius is distributing some BD for ESPN.

I've thought about getting some on ebay but they want too much $ for shipping. Its like its part of the items price. Really, how much does it cost to send a movie thru the mail.

I have had luck buying used titles on Amazon. Shipping is about $2.95 on average.

A lot of buyers on eBay open bidding low and set shipping high, just in case the DVD doesn't bring anything. They also don't have to pay commission on shipping.

Anyone remember paying Laserdisc prices?? Compared to those BD discs are quite the bargain sometimes!
