The AVI container is supported.

However, it all depends on the video and audio codecs used in said container. But in general, .avi's should play fine on the PS3.

Say if ive got some home video in avi format *my mgs ITT Tech Parody movie which was a school project* I think it was encoded probably in microsoft video, would taking the already compressed avi and reencoding to divx be a good idea using adobe premiere, dr divx, or some other solution.

90% of AVI's play fine. Although my camera AVI's are not supported natively for some reason.

The ones that don't play, you can either stream it from PMS or TVersity, or convert them.

Hmm, well streaming is out of the picture till I replace my router as of this time it severs internet connection to all devices if it detects more then one device..

I guess ill convert them, which divx setting and profile are known good settings? Ill convert them to divx as that is one of my more prefered codecs..

-edit-
That is embarsing I talked about converting video to directx im ashamed of myself now-

In order for a video to play, the PS3 has to support the container, the video codec, and the audio codec.

AVI is a container format. The PS3 does support AVI.
DivX is a video codec. The PS3 does support DivX.

Most AVI's contain DivX video. Ergo the PS3 supports most AVI's.

Some AVI's contain video encoded in other codecs. For instance, DV camcorders commonly produce AVI files containing DV video... which I don't think the PS3 can play.

So the answer for any particular AVI file is... it will probably play on the PS3. But you pretty much have to try it to find out.

Default PS3 video file capabilities

I'm having a hard time figuring out what type of video files the PS3 will play from a hard-drive. Will it play AVI's? Any help is appreciated.
