Default Is the Samsung BDP 1500 really bad?

The reason I ask is that a Zellers store in Toronto, Ontario is selling it for $149.99! The regular price was $249.99 so I worry about the price drop. Usually players go down that much when there's problems that plague the machine. I've read online about the sound dropping or cutting out.....is this really an issue or has this been fixed with a firmware update?

I know there's a thread on this particular player but I don't have time to read 50+ pages of text.

Should I steer clear or pick it up? The price is definitely great but I worry as to why it's selling cheaper than Magnavox, Insignia or Sylvania players. Samsung is a well trusted name in electronics...but is the 1500 good or not?

Thanks.

I have the 1500 and it's great, just a price drop because it has been out for a while I guess and it's not 2.0 out of the box, no issues with the player so far. Check out the 1500 thread there is plenty to read on there lol

i have the 1500 as well and its never given me a problem. once i did the most recent firmware update it plays all my Bd's. it actually loads faster than my sony bd 350. cant beat it for $150...thats how much i paid for mine as well.

Um....yeah.....I already knew that.

The whole point is to save money......otherwise I'd go with a Sony model which are much better according to online reviews. If my budget was $300 or more, I wouldn't be looking at the 1500....I knew about the higher model.

I guess I should try it and see what it's like. I can always return it right? I still haven't picked up an HDTV yet but I figure at $150 bucks I shouldn't pass on this deal. I'm looking to buy a TV this year and figured I can still use this player to watch my DVD's on as well as Blu ray flicks. I did have a question:

Am I going to see any difference watching a BR movie on a standard def TV? My friend says that it should look better because of no compression artifacts that plague DVD's. Is this true? I figure I'd start building my library of BR movies until I get my TV.

How bad are Magnavox, Insignia or Sylvania players btw? I see the Magnavox model at Walmart for $199 and always wondered if it was better than the BDP 1500 model (after hearing all the problems associated with it). I would never choose Magnavox over Samsung, but in this case I haven't heard any bad things about Magnavox's machine dropping audio. What do you think I should do? I don't mind spending an additional $50 bucks on the Magnavox player if it works better.

Oh....almost something. Is it really thatimportant to make sure the player is 2.0 in order to get BD live features? To be honest, I don't even know what those are....I'm new at this. I don't wanna be stuck down the road if my player can't support certain things. What do I need to know about live?

I had this unit for 4 days and the firmware upgrade bricked it....took it it back and waited a few weeks then got a Sony BDP-S350 and that works like a charm

Is true that the BD-P2500 has a HQV chip and the BD-1500 does not?

If so...is it worth extra $100?

Yes its the Reon HQV chip. It does a fantastic job upscaling DVDs. The BD-P1500 does not have the Reon chip to my knowledge. Having not compared this upscaler to any other one, I cannot say if it is worth $100 more. What the BD-P2500 does have that the BD-P1500 doesn't have that I am positive of is netflix VOD streaming.

I have had the 1400 for over a year now and have not had one problem. I keep the firmware updated and it works perfectly. I have a family member with the 1500 and they love it, as well.

Iam getting one soon because it's one of the only brand in NA that can read 1080i 50hz Pal Blu-ray (that are region free) and display it on a normal NTSC TV. Since i have 3 of those. It will be great..

You expect me to accept that without any details? Tell me why you think it sucks.

Have you owned one or are you basing this off what you've read? I've heard alot of good and bad things about this player. I guess I'll just go pick it up and see what happens. At the very least I have 30 days to see if it's a keeper or not.

But please provide reasons as to why something sucks.....simply posting "this sucks" just doesn't cut it in my book.

No wait, it was the 1200 that had the issues....You see a pattern here? Samsung sucks, regardless of the current line. Build quality is in the toilet and customer service is non existant. The poster that talked about how he kept his firmware updated will soon discover that Samsung quits providing direct downloads from the net once the unit has been out of production for a while. That's what happened to the 1200 with the December 2008 update. You have to burn a CD or DVD to get the update now, you can no longer download it direct to the player.

Nice move Samsuck.

As long as the audio doesn't cut off or drop I don't mind having to make a update disc. That reason alone doesn't make a player crap.

If the 1500 has audio issues then I won't buy it.....it's that simple to me. Burning a disc doesn't take long.

I have the Samsung BDP1500, and granted I've only had it a couple of months, I have not had any problems - love it. I used to swear by SONY, and had always bought their products, but there were a few I had issues with - one, just out of warranty, wasn't worth fixing as it would have cost almost as much as buying a replacement, and another product that was still under warranty, for which I would have had to agree to a $50.00 charge to my credit card, in the event I failed to return the defectivce product after receiving a "like new, refurbished replacement". I had always thought SONY warranted higher prices because of their quality, but quality was not present in these two cases, AND their warranty sucked, which I thought would have better from SONY. I'll stand Samsung any day.

The 1500? I never knew that. The LG BH200 can do PAL to NTSC conversion also, region changeable too. The Pioneer 51 can read PAL and output PAL, but it will not convert PAL to NTSC. I have a video processor for that and it works great. Just watched my Spanish [REC] import (1080i50) on my Pioneer 51 and video processor. It worked great on my NTSC display! I couldn't even tell.

I've had the 1500 since the end of last summer or so when it first came out. I've had zero issues with it...great little player especially for the price.
