+1. This is useful if you want to trigger the auto power-on of the subwoofer easily when you're playing movie/music at a moderate level of volume (though manipulate the subwoofer channel output level within the receiver's speaker settings can also do the trick).

If you don't have a Y splitter don't run out and buy one, just plug your sub woofer cable into either the L or R jack as indicated in your subs manual.
People claim that a splitter will give you a 3-6 db boost but in all honesty it's a placebo effect. You can achieve the same effect by simply increasing the subs gain in your receivers menu. Edit> the main purpose for the L and R jacks on a sub is for 2 channel stereo amps. Last edited by CasualKiller; 02-26-2009 at 04:15 AM. Reason: Speling ar bad |

If you look at the jacks one of them might be labeled LFE. I have a Velodyne and my left jack is labeled LFE.
As far as as the Y-spltter, I'm in the placebo camp. It does boost the output but does drive the internal amp harder. This can be achieved by just simply turning up the gain on the sub or receiver. Here's why, consider the amp a series of mosfet transistors, lets say your receiver is outputting 3 volts to the sub, that 3 volts is sent to the gate on the mosfet which in turn opens up the channel between the source and drain, thus your output. Increase that gate voltage with a y-splitter and that channel between the source and drain opens even larger, allowing more electrons to flow, thus making the sub sound louder. This can be achieved by turning up the gain by the same amount. Granted this was a real simple explaination of how an amp works but you should get the jist.
