I worked in Oakland for 3 years. I would never want to be a police officer in that awful city. It's so bad over there that the police officers can't even do their jobs properly because of the many restrictions the department places on them and for the fear of police brutality accusations. It's a mess. I'm very saddened to hear about this but it doesn't surprise me one bit. There's another story of the residents taunting the police at the scene of the first shooting. There is a whole lot of scum living in that city.

Yeah, I heard that also. There is a reason I moved to Reno. OPD is hiring right now at ~$69,000 a year without overtime, and I almost jumped when they started a while back... But thought better.

Sh*tty leadership (other than Mayor Brown), citizens range from the best people to the worst people, with WAY too much politics and "professional protesters" around to let the cops pick out who is who, basically allowing the worst people run the show.

There is no shortage of shootouts for OPD, but for all the faults, it is not too unsafe. Especially if you take the city into consideration.

Anyway, sucks for the family. Hard working are Oakland native.

Oddly, I got snatched by Nevada State Police today doing 85 in a 65 (one of my rare not paying attention to speed/no cruise control) and the cop gave me a ticket for 66 in a 65 first ticket in about 10 years, and it is for a mile over.

I told him to be safe and thank you.

I witnessed protesters vandalizing store property in Oakland while the OPD officers just stood and watched. I asked them why they weren't doing anything and they said that they would like to but they were instructed to not engage in any physical activity with the protesters unless their lives were in danger. So basically it's OK to break the law in front of the law in that city. There are good people in Oakland but they are hard to find. Not to mention I despise the city of Berkeley as well and they are pretty much a part of Oakland. This sucks so bad that these officers had to lose their lives but I hope it's a wakeup call for the city council and the department to start being more proactive versus reactive in that god awful city. $69,000 a year is not worth the headache of trying to enforce the law in Oakland. No thanks. That city needs Wyatt Earp..that's the only person who could restore order.

The good people are hiding.

Dont get me started on Berkeley... and I am a HUGE Cal fan... Even went for a semester right out of high school before I dropped out and joined the Marines.

UC Berkeley makes me vomit. Good school but too many hippies. I can't believe the city council approved a reserved parking spot for the liberal protesters right in front of the USMC recruiting station. I will hand it to the Marines though, they are the only ones with the kahunas to actually try and run a recruiting station in that poophole city. I'll leave it at that before I get flagged for my political views.

Thanks for your service Phantom. I'm a 12+ veteran who just got out of the Army. I pray for you guys & gals everyday because I know what you guys go through and how unthankful your jobs can be. I also have former military friends who are police officers now and I know how unthankful that job can be as well.
