Default Shines-It got a job (or how he learned to stop worrying, and love the Wal-Mart :D )

Job interview, first one in about 6 months... It's at a WalMart 20-25 miles away. But in this economic times, this is the first call back I got in a long time. So any tips would be nice, how to have a good interview. I am sure this will be very useful for me and to others my age. So tips please, also how should I dress?

Congratulations! Dress nicely and conservatively, khaki slacks and a shirt and tie or just a nice polo shirt. Be polite, friendly and confident. Make lots of eye contact and shake hands firmly.

What would that be? If you are older and interviewing I would definitelly wear a tie.

should be obvious but just in case:

shave
comb your hair in a neat hairstyle
fingernails trimmed
wear pants(that fit) on actual waist with a belt. do not sag. iron them.
tuck shirt in(button down shirt should be your actual size and not wrinkled)
clean shoes
have fresh breath, pop a mint in a few minutes before your interview or use spray, do not chew gum
sip some water 10 minutes before interview

relax and be yourself. be pleasant and courteous but not overbearing or fake. remember that the person interviewing you is a human as well and connect with them on a normal level without being too casual

A GOOD QUESTION TO ASK............

Q) Is there anything on my resume, or brought up during this interview that gives you reservations about hiring me????

AND BE PREPARED TO OFFER A REBUTTAL......

If he/she says "well, you don't have experience in....." Say how you have picked up other abilities quickly in the past, or are willing to attend special training courses etc.....

Willingness to put forth effort is a big selling point.

Good luck.

Be confidant but not cocky.

Be respectful but not submissive.

One of the most important things is the handshake. Depending on who you meet with some interviewers base a lot on the handshake. Don't break their hand but be firm.

Have you worked retail before? Just some advice, the way they are at Chachi's in Office Space holds true for retail. They want you to give 110% even though they pay you crap. You are replaceable. Keep that in mind when you get the job.

I'd say no matter what the job is, if you have a suit, wear it - I ran a telemarketing office and I always spent more time with people that put forth the effort to dress nicely and looked like they wanted to impress - generally a person that dresses seriously, is a person to be taken seriously

And for any job - any piercings, tats or other body mods should be hidden or removed prior to the interview

Also, write neatly as you can on the paperwork that they give you, sloppy handwriting is something people don't want to take time to read

This may seem like common sense but some people don't know any better - if you have kids, get a sitter! If you come to a job interview without being able to find someone to watch your kids, how the hell are you going to show up to work consistently?
