Default Sony XBR2/XBR3

I'm in the market of getting one of these sets and was wondering if anyone was/is experiencing clouds or flashlighting on their sets

I am now on my 3rd, 40 XBR2. Still has the cloudiness issues. I had to fight with Sony to get my 3rd. After a month of fighting, I got my new one and it still had the same problem. Cannot reccommend. It is good when you are not watching in the dark, but who doesn't watch movies in the dark?

No longer as much of a fan of LCD sets for any situation where there are letterboxes or watching movies at night. I know different models from different manufacturers can be either fine or not fine.

Here is my thread about my problem with two LG sets, complete with photos. It is important to note that LG did take care of me by replacing my set twice -- once with another LCD (seen in photo below) and now with a PDP, which is coming on Monday. I just can't deal with the uneven image/clouding in the corners, even though the LG tech guy stated, "This is normal for an LCD Panel TV."

I posted this over on AVS, and mentioned that the problem didn't appear until after an hour of warming up. A TV technician over there stated that the issue is a manufacturing problem. He basically said that the LCD panel is fine, but it was somehow screwed together too tightly. When heat builds, parts expand, and put pressure on the panel, creating the clouds. It made sense to me.

LG has since ended manufacturing this model, although it is still for sale until inventory goes away. My set model number is 42LB2DRA. I'm so sad about the clouding problems, because the picture on this Full HD TV is gorgeous in High Def. At the time I bought it, nothing else came close. Since then, other models have come out from other companies that are even better. Really a shame -- I loved almost everything else about this LG Xcanvas, and the sound (including 5 channels with sub) was awesome. My new PDP won't have that good of sound.

LG has since come out with all-new models of LCDs, which are just now rolling into stores here. They have a red base that is round, like a ring on its side. The picture on them is incredible (although the Samsungs look as good or better).

Great set if you care about how th set looks when off. If you want pure blacks and no clouds go with the Sharp. I do have cloud issues, but only when there isn't a dvd, or some type of picture. When it's just the backlight and no source playing.

If the clouding issues continue, then it's best to get a Samsung 1080p TV instead.

Or wait for Sony to release newer models instead that have Trumotion and xv Color (xvYCC color space) because the current Sony crop are outdated.

I was looking at the 2007 Samsungs but there seems to be a serious HDMI handshake issue with those sets and I will be using a lot of HDMI components. Until they are fixed or unless Sony releases the XBR4's with the clouding fixed, I will continue to research on those two sets before pulling the trigger. I just wanted to know how widespread the clouding issue was on the current XBR3's and XBR2's.

I'll be staying tuned on AVSForums i guess for the time being

Yeah I have a 40" XBR3 and love it. So it might be the size issue. I was also very impressed with the Samsung LCD though.

It is not always the TV problem if you can get that in your skull. It could be something that could cause the problem. Sony wouldnt keep making these tv with the same problem to the same picky customer like yourself to have this problem. Check your cables, power surge, or components. They may be the whats causing the cloudiness problem.

Unfortunately, the defect appears in a majority of sets.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=748779

Even Australia-market sets (X200A units) are affected as well. So my suggestion would be that you really have to test the units because Sony produced a lot of defective units for this line of LCD TVs (X series/XBR 2-3).

Suggestion: Skip this TV and wait for newer Sony 1080p TVs to come out.

If Sony and/or Samsung can't satisfy you atm, then wait for their newer 1080p sets to come out........or......

Wait for Pioneer 8th gen Plasma TV sets to come out.

I have a 40" in the bedroom and have never seen such issues... no issues at all actually. I also have a 50" Samsung DLP and it's a piece of junk by comparison. No brainer IMO.
