Default 24p Support in PS3 1.8 Update!

I'm not sure if this was mentioned before but after updating my PS3 to Version 1.8 I noticed that it also includes 24p support!

You can find this feature in the BD/DVD settings.

My LCD now correctly recognizes 24 frames too.

Does anyone have more information about the "full" feature list of this new 1.8 Update?

I was just about to mention this (I just saw it a few moments ago). I am totally shocked! I was not expecting 1080p24 support so soon! I am pumped! This is amazing!

I don't know what the "full" setting is. I can guess it means "anamorphic".

Way to go Sony!

I also am totally shocked. I thought the 1080P/24 support was a false rumor that someone started. I am glad I was wrong. Sony back in Nov 2006 was smart enough to place a HDMI 1.3 in the PS3 and smart enough to make a graphics chip that could support 1080P/24 when the software was finished. What other surprises does Sony have for PS3 owners in the future?
I guess this means I will be buying a PS3 this year.

Decisions, decisions. I'm using my parents XBR2 for playback now until I move into the new house. Was thinking of picking up an XBR2 for myself. Will there be a replacement for the XBR2 in the fall that will have 1080P/24 playback? Is it worth is considering the price of XBR2's is falling and should be pretty low when I am ready to buy? The joy of spending.

Regarding the 1.8 update, this is what I noticed:

1. Upscaling works thru HDMI and works great! If your display can show true 1080P, watching high bit rate standard DVDs is a revelation. Watching Pixar's "The Incredibles" in 1080P is truly a visual feast, with fine detail that is close to HD, more like 720P in clarity. Unfortunately, bad transfers shows it's faults with it's higher compression artifacts more visible than before.

2. The PS3 now passes ALL the Silicon Optix HQV STandard DVD tests. Previously, the PS3 was terrible. It had failed all the HQV tests, but now it passes all the cadence, detail, interlacing and text scrolling tests. The racing car scene locks in immediately with no moire effects. The fluttering flag shows no jagged artifacts on the edges. The rotating bar tests show no problems with interlacing.

3. Not mentioned but available is 1080P at 24Hz (for Blu-Rays only) for displays that can accept the signal. Previously, the PS3 only supported 60Hz which introduced a judder when scenes showed any horizontal panning. This is due to the fact that movies are filmed at 24Hz and converting to 60Hz does not result in an even cadence (i.e. 24 fps cannot be converted to 60Hz evenly). Note: You MUST leave the 1080P24 setting at AUTO!! It can cause issues if your display cannot handle 24Hz if your force it on.

4. The PS3 runs hotter!! Previously, my PS3 ran pretty quiet. AFter the upgrade, the units fans now run louder than before. Obviously, all these new features are making the cell processors work harder, so it's generating more heat.

Overall, the v1.8 firmware is must have if you plan to watch DVDs on the PS3. The PS3 now outperforms my Denon 3930CI DVD player with the Reon processor which is no small feat. The details at 1080P from standard DVDs are so much better, it really can look hi-def with good DVDs. At 720P, the image is much improved over 480P but it really must be seen at 1080P as it shows an improvement even over 720P.

Really? It helps that much? I thought one needed to have a 24p capable TV? I guess I'll have to check out some of my Blu-rays to verify that it does indeed help. I have a Sony XBR3 40" via HDMI.

I was satisfied with the upscaling. I wasn't ecstatic, but happy. Even my wife noticed a slight difference. After she seen the improvement she asked, "ok, how much did the upgrade cost?" LOL

Are you serious? In what regards is it superior (deinterlacing/motion or detail)? I don't have my PS3 hooked up the internet and the PS3 network page is still on 1.7 so I couldn't test it yet. But if true:

Default CONFIRMED 1080p24 output from 24p-mastered BDs

Sony provides a major update for PS3 owners! The new Version 1.8 provides:

Upscaling of SD DVD software up to 1080p over HDMI

Film-based deinterlacing for SD DVD material

1080p24 output from 24p-mastered BDs

Blacker-than-black and whiter-than-white over HDMI
720p output from BD (and DVD) playback for those with 720p displays

I just updated my PS3 with the new 1.8 firmware and can confirm the DVD upscaling and 720p output from BD (noticeably improved PQ for my 720p displays). If you have a PS3, be sure to update your firmware and enjoy!

This is confirmed on DVDfile.com

Outputting Blu-ray at 720p now eliminates the slight aliasing I had before on highly contrasting edges (e.g. SPHE logo white on black) when downscaling from 1080i to 1366x768.

Of course you need a 1080/24p capable display. Like my AE1000. But the difference is very noticable.

Sony Pearl works fine as do a few others (avsforums).

What are some "24p-mastered BDs" so I can check to see the difference between them on my Panny and PS3? Is the NIN one?
