United Kingdom Beauty and the Beast - Diamond Edition

Because Belle deserves her own thread.

A supposed breakdown of the discs for Beauty and the Beast.

Quote:
Beauty and the Beast: Diamond-Edition Blu-Ray and DVD

Disc One: Beauty and the Beast - Feature Film & Special Features

Feature Film:
-Beauty and the Beast - 1991 film, directed by Kirk Wise & Gary Trousdale. Presented in "Original Theatrical" and "Special Edition".
--Original Theatrical (1:24:17)
--Special Edition (1:31:06)

Backstage Disney:
--Storyboard Version - the theatrical version of the film with PIP option of the storyboards. I'm guessing that its inclusion here is why the "Work in Progress" version isn't included in the Blu-Ray set? (1:24:17, Blu-Ray Exclusive)

-Audio Commentary - since there's no mention of Cine-Explore, this likely is the same commentary from 2002, with Don Hahn, Kirk Wise, Gary Trousdale, and a brief pre-recorded interview snippet Alan Menken.

Music & More:
-Disney Song Along mode - "Sing-Along" with one letter changed.

-Music Video - all-new music video featuring Disney Channel star...TBA, I guess.

Deleted Scenes: (27:21)
-Alternate Opening - featuring an entirely new opening of the film and a different cast of characters. Since we don't know how long this runs, and there's an untitled Diamond Edition Disc 1 bonus feature, I'm assigning that runtime here. And if this alternate opening is indeed 18 minutes long, well...I'll be in BATB heaven. (18:07 scene, 0:34 intro)
--Introduction (0:34)
--Alternate Opening (18:07?)

-Belle in the Library - never-before-seen moment where Belle meets three new characters in the library. (8:40)

Disney FamilyPlay:
-Disney Quest: Enchanted Challenge - help Belle and the Beast fall in love in order to break the spell before the last petal falls.

-Bon Jour, Who Is This? A Disney TelePlay Game - Powered by BD-Live. Using your cell phone, guess the identity of the other players before they guess yours.

Disc Two: Beauty and the Beast - Special Features

Feature Film: (1:24:17 + 0:28 intro)
-Beauty and the Beast: Work in Progress - 1991 film, directed by Kirk Wise & Gary Trousdale. Only on the DVD version. With an intro by Don Hahn. (1:24:17 + 0:28 intro)

Beyond Beauty: (51:10 + interactive features)
-Beyond Beauty: The Untold Stories Behind Making Beauty And The Beast - new documentary. Interactive version a Blu-Ray exclusive. (51:10)

-Art Galleries - only available inside the "Beyond Beauty Experience".

Broadway Beginnings: (12:33)
-Broadway Beginnings - Up close and personal celebrity interviews with Nick Jonas, Donny Osmond, Toni Braxton, and others who have starred in the Broadway production. (12:33)

Composing a Classic: (19:26 + Song Demos?)
-Composing a Classic: A Musical Conversation With Alan Menken, Don Hahn, and Richard Kraft - does what it says on the tin? (19:26)

-Demo Recordings - likely in this section since it couldn't possibly be in the Classic DVD Features. (0:26 + 28:39?)
--Introduction (0:26)

Possible Song Demos to be included:
--"Belle" (4:52)
--"Belle (Reprise)" (1:01)
--"Gaston" (3:40)
--"Gaston (Reprise)" (2:28 )
--"Be Our Guest (Maurice Version)" (3:28 )
--"Human Again" (9:13)
--"Beauty and the Beast" - Work Tape & Demo (3:57)

Classic DVD Features: (1:12:31)
-Early Presentation Reel (2:45)
--Introduction by Don Hahn (0:35)
--Presentation Reel (2:10)

-Alternate Version: "Be Our Guest" (4:52)
--Introduction (1:10)
--"Be Our Guest" (3:42) - not yet passed by BBFC

-Deleted Song: "Human Again" (8:17)
--Introduction by Don Hahn (0:43)
--Introduction by Alan Menken (0:39)
--"Human Again" (6:55)

-Animation Tests, Roughs, & Clean-Up (4:51)
--Introduction by Don Hahn (0:30)
--Animation Tests, Roughs, & Clean-Up (4:21) - not yet passed by BBFC

-Pencil Version: "The Transformation" (5:22)
--Introduction (1:02)
--"The Transformation" (4:20) - not yet passed by BBFC

-Camera Move Test (2:05)
--Introduction (0:38 )
--Camera Move Test (1:27) - not yet passed by BBFC

-A Transformation: Glen Keane (3:14)

-Alternate Score: "Death of the Beast" (1:56)
--Introduction (0:22)
--"Death of the Beast" (1:34)

-Trailers and TV Spots (9:07)
--Introduction (0:32)
--Original Theatrical Trailer - 1991 (1:58 ) - not yet passed by BBFC

-The Story Behind The Story - 2002 documentary. (25:37)
--Introduction: Celine Dion (1:37)
--Cinderella: Paige O'Hara (2:28 )
--The Lion King: James Earl Jones (3:26)

Beauty and the Beast is easily my favourite Disney film and is also their best. Thanks for the info. Nice to see they're including the Special Edition too and also a big long 'Making-Of' documentary, always love Disney's ones.

Can't wait to own this in Hi-Def. Bring it on.

That's fine, people have listed most of this in the upcoming Disney releases thread, but I thought this was a more comprehensive list in one place of what is shaping up to be the best Diamond Edition yet.

I'm looking forward to having my favourite film on Blu Ray.

Can't think why it's your favourite film (?)

I just hope it has a slipcover, like Snow White, so that they all looka like, beacuse recently Disney have released only very limited quantaties of them (Toy Story 1 7 2 and Dumbo come to mind).

I wouldn't bank on it being any less rare. Besides, the Snow White slipcover was limited too. It's pretty easy to pick up a cover for Dumbo and the Toy Stories if you search around. As for BatB, I suggest you pre-order when it comes up on the Internet over here.

I know I'm making it sound like I'm a sad slipcase fantatic, I'm not, but it would be nice.

You are correct Snow White was limited, but pratically every store you went into at the time of release had one, but with Dumbo I haven't found a single one in any store. The only place I've found any is on eBay. I'm just so confused as to why suddenly Disney aren't releasing as many, is it because both the Toy Stories and Dumbo came out over here before America, mind you Dumbo isn't being released over there until Feb 2011. I may well just pre-order and see what happens.

lol no don't worry, I'm collecting the slipcovers too. I have all the Pixar ones released so far (except Wall E which never came with one), but I was a latecomer to the Disney Classics so the only covers I have for those are Dumbo and Bolt - which I'm fine with since Dumbo started off the whole numbered spines thing.

Anyway, I guess it must depend on where you live because one or two stores near me still have Dumbos with covers. But do preorder! And I recommend choosing HMV.com because they are least likely to remove covers early in my experience.

It may well be to do with where I live, because of my two local HMVs, the one I looked in not a single copy had a slipcover. Or maybe I'm just stupidly unlucky.

Hopefully we can keep this from becoming a slipcover topic, I'm sure it will have one.

As for why it's my favourite. I think there are a number of reasons.

Beauty and the Beast was the first Disney film I saw as an adult when someone loaned me a copy of the VHS, and from there I was hooked on the Disney Animated Classics, so it always has a special place in my heart.

I appreciate that there are a few spots where the animation was rushed, but for the most part, the animation is fantastic, and where it really shines, it's incredible, for example, the scene where Belle discovers the enchanted rose, the scene where she tends the Beast's wounds, the ballroom, the transformation.

The principal cast are all excellent in their roles, and I love Paige O'Hara's vocals.

It's a fantastic musical where the songs really do move the story along, the story doesn't stop for a musical number in this one, each song progresses the story.

It's a perfect example of a movie where Disney actually improved on the original story. With the original version not having a villain, other than the Beast (who turns out not to be a villain at all), the introduction of Gaston as a mirror image of the Beast is a fantastic addition. The addition of the Enchanted Objects move the story away from just being a case of Belle and the Beast sitting down to a meal every evening and him asking her to marry her. And the introduction of the Enchanted Rose and the spell, adds some urgency and a common interest for the romance to develop, in the original it was Belle's father who picked a rose from the Beast's garden. So I really think it improves the story,

And of course the character of Belle who is my favourite Disney character. I think she's a much more rounded character than some of the other Princesses. It was a time when Disney were obviously trying to make their heroines a bit more interesting than being the damsel in distress like Snow, Cinders and Aurora. Whereas Ariel, could be argued was a bit of a lovestruck teenager, Belle seemed to have a bit more background to her. She was also a strong heroine, feisty, intelligent, and was a character who looked beneath the surface. She was also very much the protagonist, in the movie and drove the story along.

So, it's no wonder that she's my favourite, her character has got no parallel...

Everything you have said is the exact reason why it's also my favourite Disney, maybe even favourite film ever.

Have you heard anything on the 3D re-release, because I know Don Hahn decided to post-pone the release til next year for it's 20th Anniversary, but I can't find any other new news. How about you?

It was postponed to 2012 I think, but I don't know if it's still on the cards. Hope so.

Incidentally, there is a big hardcover out in September on the making of the film.

2012? I heard it was 2011 for the films 20th Anniversary, because Don Hahn wanted to make it more of an 'event'. I too hope it's still coming out as it would be glorious to see it on the big-screen.

Mmmm... Interesting book, might well get it. Perhaps this is a very vague sign that there will be a 3D release since no other Disney Classic Blu-ray has had this sort of thing, so maybe Disney are trying to get some merchandise out there early so people are aware of the 3D release well in advance.

I'd anticipate the Disney Store starting to get quite a bit of Belle merchandise in over the next few months, they did with Snow White and Aurora the last couple of years.

I'm really hoping they devote as much bit rate as possible to the presentation of the actual films. It would never happen, but I'd prefer each version of the film having its own disc and features to match. The original Sp.Ed. really suffered from compression issues - even the UK single disc release had the same problems, although most of the features from disc one of the Collector's edition were dropped. Lazy Disney using the same master perhaps?

I'm really looking forward to this release - day 1 purchase for me and definitely you, I suspect!

The Blu will be the fifth different format of the title for me!

We are allowed to speculate, it's a factor of interest for collectors! Of course I know your stance on it, we were merely mentioning it to each other.

Beauty and the Beast is my 2nd favourite Disney Classic behind The Lion King, and was the very first film I ever saw in the cinema, so I'm looking forward to this release.

Thanks for putting all the confirmed extras in one place, that's very helpful. I'm still not clear as to what's happening with Enchanted Christmas. It will be interesting to see how sequels will be dealt with in terms of re-release.

Perhaps so, but as everyone seems to have set up individual threads for films like Dumbo, the Toy Story's and Alice in Wonderland, I thought it was only right that the tale as old as time that truly deserves it's own thread should have one.

And after all, if nothing else, I've always been Belle's biggest promoter.

Well that's absolutely fine, but let's not have the whole thread drop into discussion about potential slipcovers. Let's wait and see until it's actually released, and just accept for now that it's almost certain to have one. There must be more important things to talk about than slipcovers anyway.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a collectors set announced for the US like Snow White received last year. I'm also curious to see if the DVD edition will come with a book in the UK - why they can't make those available with the Blu Ray's, very frustrating. Hopefully HMV will have a nice exclusive, like the Snow White film cel we got last year.

Rumours on Ultimate Disney that Jordin Sparks is doing the new music video for the release.

I would have liked to see Paige O'Hara record a version for it. You can hear Paige's version as the background music to my blog page here:-

http://www.bellesenchantedworld.co.uk/page2.html

I think she does a fantastic version, but I guess she wouldn't appeal to the kiddy crowd, despite being the 'original' Belle.

I have to say that the artwork for the release has grown on me quite a bit since I first saw it. So much so that I've now placed it on the homepage of my website.
