Default Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray

I bought the Platinum Edition the day it was released in 2002. I am SO happy I did as it is one of my absolute favorite Disney films and is now damn near impossible to find. However, even though they restored it to perfection, they included 3 versions of the film on the DVD and so the image suffers dramatically with each version. I cannot wait for this to receive a Blu-ray release. With it already being restored, it should not require too much work. But, Disney needs to get their act together with issuing their desired classics in a more timely fashion. It has been 6 years since its last release, so I am hoping maybe October '09 as nothing is "officially" confirmed for that slot yet. If not, then I hope by March '10. Seems sick to wait so long, but this would sell so many copies on DVD and Blu-ray. Even more now than when it was released in 2002 now that people have officially converted to DVD. I mean, for God's sake, it is the only animated feature to EVER be nominated for Best Picture. What do you all think? (and yes, I know we are getting Sleeping Beauty in October and Pinocchio in March '09. Will pick them up 1st day as well).

Yeah it'll be cool, but Pinocchio will be unreal, so will the end of Sleeping Beauty

OMG I totally remember that failure lol. So many people were angry with this because of the price and I guess the image quality was terrible.

They won't

That was justa quick and dirty LD rehash to make a quick buck.

It'll come whenever it's on the platinum schedule

I am guessing that you have never seen and know nothing about Disney's Platinum line. They are meticulously restored to perfection. Beauty and the Beast was no exception. Beautiful picture and sound. Only suffers because they squeezed 3 versions of the film on one disc.

I'm referring to the Disney 9 disc box set they put out, not the platinum BATB

I know plenty about the Disney platinum line. They're still not going to run off a bunch of blu-rays when they have their entire animated line marketing planned out years in advance. BVHE is a very different animal than it was in 1998/99, and they're in no tearing rush at all. Disney was very shaky on DVD at that point. Most of their discs were just quick buck LD rehashes. I don't even think they put out an anamorphic title till Shakespeare in Love (CE, not the vanilla version)

Fox's was the same way.

Oh okay good. Glad to know someone else knows their stuff. Yeah, the Limited Issue titles were absolutely terrible and non anamorphic. But since it was the best way to have the movie other than VHS, people were paying outrageous prices for The Little Mermaid and The Jungle Book once they were OOP until their Platinum debut.

Pick up the Enchanted Blu Ray and use the D Files special features. Several of the featurettes you can unlock have clips from the Disney catalogue and it is very clear that Disney has "Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin" ready (or at least are working on having them ready) for Blu-Ray release because they look gorgeous, especially in comparison to some of the other clips.

Noticed that, too. BATB has long appeared on their "Coming soon to Blu-ray" list. Of course, Disney's use of the term "coming soon" is open to interpretation.

I learned this past weekend that my friend who works for Lyric Street (Disney's record label) can get all her Disney Blu-rays for free. I am insanely jealous.

Both films where prepped for IMAX re-releases, and they looked pretty great on there, so one would think that they'd do fine on the small screen with existing masters

Starting with Beauty and the Beast onward, Disney had kept digital masters of the films.

Keeping titles locked up in 'vault Disney' for years is their way of increasing demand, and as a result, increasing perceived value. See, it's working on you (no offence) very well. It's not at all a matter of them needing "to get their act together, it's quite deliberate! They want to make sure that you buy it when it's available (which you will) because it won't be available for a long time after that.

It also keeps them from having heavily discounted catalogue titles, like so many studios do. If the Beauty and the Beast DVD was consistently available since the 2002 release, how much would people pay for an animated kid's movie? So far, every time Disney has re-released a movie, it's been on a new format, which makes us think it is worth paying for...again.

Will I buy it when it is released on Blu-ray? Yes. Am I naive enough to think Disney isn't doing this on purpose? No. It's just business.

Yep, all Disney classics are "coming soon", in geological terms.

Of all the Platinum Editions ever released on DVD, I missed out on Beauty and The Beast and Snow White

If Disney plans to release DVD Platinum Editions of their classics with Blu-Ray simultaneously, then don't hold your breath for Beauty and the Beast as that will not be out for a long while. Let's hope that they deviate from keeping on release DVD and Blu Platinum Editions together as I want BATB.

I just bought The Little Mermaid PE DVD today and was thoroughly disappointed with its restoration. This won't be on Blu for an even longer while than BATB, but already they need to work on it. For heaven's sake, Cinderella looks better.

Also, both films had detailed animation added to the existing prints, so that details wouldn't be blurred at the resolution of their IMAX-sized re-releases--
Which, in terms of detailed resolution at any size, is always a plus.

(While DLP films like Lilo & Stitch, Treasure Planet and Brother Bear already had to be suited to fit hi-res detail projection.)

I've seen on some website that these are the following "likely" limited-release titles (of course, Sleeping Beauty is confirmed for Oct08 release):

Mar09: Pinocchio
Oct09: Snow White

You know, I thought TLM's restoration was good when I got it back in October of 2006. However, now that I know more and observe animation more clearly, it is one of the weakest restored titles out of the Disney platinum releases. There is actually a lot of grain present which is okay in live-action films but with hand-drawn animation, it just looks aged and more dull.

When I watched 1950's Cinderella on DVD, I was shocked at how well it looked. Whoever Disney had restore that one did an excellent job.

All Disney animated features since The Rescuers Down Under have digital negatives. RDU is so often forgotten when people refer to the "2nd Golden Age", but I remember sitting in a theater in Austin on opening night -- alone and I don't mean alone as in I didn't bring friends, I mean the entire theater was empty -- and the opening 15 minutes alone featured animation and ambitious visuals unseen since the Walt era. It is a cliche to say this, but the film literally took my breath away. Technically, Rescuers Down Under trumps many of the Disney animated features made in its wake.

Ever since, I have been a staunch defender of this film, even though it has its flaws. It does not deserve its obscurity. With story work by Pixar's Joe Ranft, and even a technical assist by Pixar (see the credits), it is an important film, and widly entertaining. I'll be first in line when it comes to Blu-Ray.
