Default Dr.No bars on side?

Is this suppose to have skinny black bars on the side? Is it just because it is an older movie or is there something wrong with my tv? I didnt notice this when i watched live and let die or thunderball? So is this normal?

It's normal. It's presented in 1.66:1 aspect ratio so you get bars on the sides. But if you look on imdb.com, the intended aspect ratio for European cinemas was 1.66:1 but the intended aspect ratio for US cinemas was 1.85:1 so you're getting it as it was shown in European cinemas.

Did the UK get more top and bottom info, or did the US get more side info, or was it a mix of both?

I could be wrong, but aren't both the UK and the USA Blu-rays in 1.66:1 - despite what www.blu-ray.com says

Plus people in the US aren't getting the OAR if OAR means the aspect ratio that it was originally presented in in American cinemas, since in American cinemas according to imdb it's intended ratio was 1.85:1.

So what I think it is is,
European intended cinema ratio: 1.66:1 (according to imdb)
USA intended cinema ratio: 1.85:1 (according to imdb)

European Blu-ray 1.66:1
USA Blu-ray 1.66:1

I don't know about the dvd versions.

Same as you said.

Only the earlier SE version was zoomboxed in 1.77.

Maybe the OP should fix his TV overscan if he doesn't like black bars.

Thanks, but I meant "when released in cinemas"

I wasn't alive when it was released in the cinema. But www.imdb.com says the "intended cinema ratio" for Europe and USA and I've shown those ratios in my post

ie. Europe intended cinema ratio: 1.66
USA intended cinema ratio: 1.85:1 <- that's not what the USA has on the USA Blu-ray release

as well as the Blu-ray ratios.

I understand that, but what I meant was what sort of framing occured in the cinemas. eg opened up or cropped "top/bottom" or "sides" or both (in the cinema not on DVD).

I don't know sorry. I only know what imdb.com says.

If I had to guess I'd guess that the USA cinemas would have cropped it a bit more on the top and bottom (based on the intended USA cinema ratio imdb says, ie. 1.85:1). But that's just me guessing and I don't actually know

1.66.1 is the original aspect ratio. What happened is that most US theaters could not project that frame properly. So the image was overmatted to 1.85.1 for US theatrical prints.

The cinematographer shot for 1.66:1 but also composed the frame for 1.85:1. However, on the previous DVD releases (prior to the Ultimate Edition DVDs with restored picture and sound), MGM cropped the image to fill 1.85:1.

When Lowry was doing the digital restorations, they worked with MGM to preserve the proper 1.66:1 AR for Dr.No, From Russia With Love, Goldfinger, and The Man With The Golden Gun using the original elements.

Paul Verhoeven and Peter Weir ran into the same AR issues with Robocop and The Truman Show respectively. Verhoeven wanted 1.66:1 but theatrically and on home video, Robocop is 1.85:1. Weir was finally able to present The Truman Show at 1.66:1 on the first DVD release. Weir wanted that aspect ratio since it was the closest to TV's 1.33:1

You would never open up the sides theatrically. The negative is hard- or soft-matted on the top and bottom.

Well, actually it too was pillar-boxed, though just a sliver, at a ratio of exactly 1.75:1.
