Default Have any anime film's from AVD ever hit North America in Blu-ray

I have a old VHS tape of an Anime film called Tekken based on the Capcom video game. It was dubbed into English which I am fine with I wonder if Tekken the movie will hit Blu-ray, ever. I have not seen a DVD of Tekken in Victoria BC, but I have not checked any thing on line.

Nope. I assume you meant ADV. They haven't put anything out on Blu-Ray. They planned on putting out Lady Death but decided against it. I wouldn't count on them putting out anything any time soon.

Funimation seems to be picking up a lot of their slack. They're really the company that's putting out the most titles on DVD/BLU in North America, so look for them to ramp things up soon. They just announced some newer Blu releases recently this month (no dates as of yet).

ADV's license expired on Namco's Tekken a long time ago. You can get it on Amazon for about $25

I wouldn't count on seeing anything on Blu-ray from adv for the forseeable future

Oddly enough, I timed the English subtitles for the 2003 re-release of Tekken on DVD in the UK. I can't say I enjoyed the anime, but if you're a fan of the games...

ADV is pretty much down the hole financially, so I wouldn't count on seeing any BDs from them any time soon. Funimation actually picked up a large part of ADV's library as a result of their problems.

Well in that case, I hope they release "Robotech" in the very near future.

It wasn't all Sojitz - why do you think they pulled out? If ADV had been making all their contractual obligations, it never would have happened. I'm not exactly privy to the details of their agreement, but it could have been things like making payments on time, achieve sales goals etc. With the way the market is right now, they would have run into issues sooner or later.

As for Robotech, they'd have to get hold of the new HD masters for Macross from Japan first, and then they'd have to re-edit the entire show together from scratch. I'm not aware of any HD masters for Souther Cross or Mospeada yet, so seasons 2 and 3 would have to wait as well.

Shin wanted to do his work in HD, but he just didn't have the budget for it. He could either spend the money on an HD scan, or large amounts of dirt removal and other fixes. He chose the latter.

Re-editing the show shouldn't be hard, they may even be able to just use their project files from doing it in SD. These are the days before digital manipulation, so "snip snip snip, clip clip clip" is all that's required. Run the 2 side by side until they deviate, match it up again and move on. Probably wouldn't be hard to do it in 2-3 weeks tops.

However GETTING those masters would likely prove very tricky given the current legal hell the franchise rests in

Not that any US anime distributor has ever ripped a Japanese DVD, added their sub and dub and shipped it before It has happened on occasion

Getting the masters shouldn't be that hard - the lawsuits have pretty much cleared up the rights issue enough that it should be possible to negotiate for them at this point. I'll dig a bit and see if I can get any more information on what the current status is.

Unfortunately, yes. The problem is that Japanese DVDs tend to peg the bitrates to the max of what the DVD specification allows, and if you rip the discs and add extra audio tracks, the resulting disc will have compatibility issues on some players. That won't be an issue for most BDs though, due to the 8 Mbps set aside for audio. As long as there's enough free space on the disc that is...

It is if the Japanese want to charge the GDP of a small country for them, which has happened many times in the past. Hence the "accidental" ripping on certain titles I mentioned

Not as much of a problem as you might think for the amount I know it was done Even if the authoring house is doing a mild extra squishing, it's likely not going to be much of an issue when the master Japan used is radically better than what you have in your master library

Instead you get compression problems - which I grant you is pretty common for R1 anime DVDs. It's definitely not an ideal situation.
