Default Prince Caspian Audio Problem

Just watched Prince Caspian and experienced some strange audio issues. Most noticible was the dialog volume was extremely low in comparison to the rest of the sound track and I seemed to be getting some clipping going on with the surround. Sounded almost like a skipping record. All the indicators on my receiver appear correctly (7.1 DTS, etc.) but the sound wasn't "right." Haven't experienced this with my other discs. Anyone got any ideas what the problem might be or could it be I've got a defective disc?

Is it kind of like that problem? I am not sure about the center channel issue though, are you using an SPL meter and setting the speakers to the proper levels?

Similar issue as the thread you listed. I'm going to try to recalibrate my audio and see what happens.

PS3 and Sony 820, centre channel was kinda low... it was the first movie I watched with DRC turned off... maybe this has something to do with it

I don't believe DRC affects DTS titles?

PS3 & Onkyo 605, no playback issues after several viewings.

But when it is sent as LPCM to the receiver (PS3)...?

Well, recalibrating my receiver did absolutely nothing. Tried another 7.1 BD (Forbidden Kingdom) with no troubles at all. I'm thinking it's a bad disc and am going to send it back. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Try to rent it locally and see what happens.

By chance, is your speaker set-up 5.1? I've had a few strange issues with 7.1 discs not playing correctly in my 5.1 set-up. Most of the time the receiver handles this properly, but on the discs that screw it up (The Orphanage is one) I can fix it by manually setting the receiver to 5.1.

Have never had this problem with a Disney BD that I remember though. New Line had a run of them with this problem.

From the relevant page in the PS3 online manual:

Quote:
BD / DVD Dynamic Range Control
Enable or disable your PS3™ system's dynamic range control feature when playing a BD or DVD containing audio recorded in Dolby audio (Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus and Dolby TrueHD). This setting is for use only when Linear PCM audio format is selected as the audio output format.‎
So DRC is Dolby-exclusive, to the best of my understanding, and has no impact on this disc's DTS audio.

Player or Amp decoding? Problems usually occurs when amp decodes the bitstream.

No, it's a 7.1 setup. This is the first time I've experienced this issue with a 7.1 DTS master audio soundtrack. Not that I have a bunch of them but I do have several and no troubles with them. I could handle the "skips" that occur if only the center channel level was good enough to hear the dialog above everything else. If I increase the volume so you can actually hear the dialog it just about blows out the windows of my house.

I watched it on a PS3 with the 820 last night.
I did note that I had it around the same volume level as when I watched Dark Knight last week and the dialogue did seem a little quieter.

That is unusual with a DTS track, where normally they're played at a lower volume than something in Dolby TrueHD which tends to need a bit of turning up.

I'm not sure about this one. It wasn't so quiet that I couldn't hear the dialogue perfectly fine; but thinking about it - maybe it wasn't as wonderfully clear as it should be for a lossless track.

I agree that if I had turned it up any more then the rest of the track would have sounded too loud.
