Pretty sure if you have a "truehd yamaha receiver," it doesn't matter whether your player outputs it or not. Your receiver can do it for you, so long as you hook up with HDMI.

Someone, surely, will be along to correct me if I'm wrong.

I would think it would be like the PS3's update when it want to DTS-HD and DOLBY TRUE-HD
and it is still one of the best Blu-ray players out there.

You need to set your audio output to HDMI in the S301 menu, that way it will be decoded and then send to the receiver.

what blu ray player do you have first off? that way we can help you out with your 7.1 question. now to answer your other question, optical will only give you 5.1 lossy surround.

I could be wrong but I donm't think it matters to much Espesially if your player decodes the audio. Someone will be along shortly on doubt to say i'm either right, worng, or mistaken. OR confused. (wouldn't be the first time)

If it's two years old, it's either a Sony BDP-300 or BDP-301.

You'll get 7.1 sound from LPCM Blu's (like 3:10 to Yuma). It will also decode Dolby Tru-HD 7.1 encodes internally, but I can't think of any of those at the moment. You have to get the latest firmware updates from Sony to be sure to get that mode.

What you won't get is DTS-MA 7.1 internal decoding. It will only decode the "lossy" 5.1 DTS mode. So unless your receiver does the decoding, you can't get anything but 5.1 from DTS stuff.

Fiber optic won't do and of the 7.1 modes, except LPCM, and I'm not even sure about that.

If your receiver has analog (RCA cable) inputs - 8 of them - you can get a newer player that has 7.1 output through RCA, instead of HDMI. Fiber optic is now pretty much set aside as an output mode.

With fiber optic you'll only get two-channel LPCM.

No, your current equipment is capable of it if you follow the advice given earlier in this thread.
