‘Watchmen’ Screenwriter Posts Open Letter Urging Fans To See The Film Again
Published by Casey Seijas on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at 10:41 am.

'Watchmen'Despite the fact that “Watchmen” opened up to big box-office numbers with no A-list actors, a running-time just shy of three hours and a kid un-friendly R-rating, it seems that many critics and analysts are labeling Zack Snyder’s adaptation a certified box office flop after the film failed to crack the $60M mark during its debut weekend. And while most cast and crew would simply let the haters hate, “Watchmen” screenwriter David Hayter has decided to fight back.

In an open letter posted on HardcoreNerdity, Hayter recounts the years of blood, sweat and tears he and his fellow crew members put into the film, and humbly offers a plea to fans to see the movie again this weekend.

“You have to understand, everyone is watching to see how the film will do in its second week,” said Hayter. “If you’re thinking of seeing it again anyway, please go back this weekend, Friday or Saturday night.”

“Demonstrate the power of the fans,” continued Hayter, “because it’ll help let the people who pay for these movies know what we’d like to see. Because if it drops off the radar after the first weekend, they will never allow a film like this to be made again.”

Hayter insists that his modest proposal has nothing to do with financial gain on his part (”I do not profit one cent from an increase in box office, although an increase in box office can add to the value of the writers’ eventual residual profits from DVD and TV sales.”), but rather a strong belief that, much like the book, “Watchmen” is something special and unique, and shouldn’t easily be forgotten.

“I firmly believe that ‘Watchmen’, the novel, must be read through more than once to even have the faintest grip on it,” Hayter related. “And I believe the film is the same.

“This is a movie made by fans, for fans. Hundreds of people put in years of their lives to make this movie happen, and every one of them was insanely committed to retaining the integrity of this amazing, epic tale. This is a rare success story, bordering on the impossible, and every studio in town is watching to see if it will work. Hell, most of them own a piece of the movie.”
Post your thoughts.

Roger Ebert saw it twice. The first in a normal setting and the second time IMAX. He loved it both times and took more away the second viewing.

Not voting in the poll because I don't believe in it.

If I can fit it into my schedule, yes, I may go again. I may even pull a solo viewing on Saturday in IMAX if I can't find anybody to go.

I enjoyed it the first time but want to rewatch it now that the hype has (REALLY) died down.

Maybe, it seems like one of those films that I need to see twice to get the full effect.

I enjoyed it the first time, but don't plan on seeing it a second time until it hits Blu-ray.

Probably make a trip to the IMAX theater again this weekend. Early Sunday was good to me last weekend, may have to do it again. Jackasses generally aren't going to get up early to ruin my movie experience.

UPS Wise Ass. It is my gamer tag for XBOX Live and PS Network. Apparently, upssmartass was taken. My superiors have called me that on more than one occasion.

I think Hayter is correct, but he's also trying to milk as much money possible from people's pockets

Well, it made $17,817,301 this weekend. That's a pretty steep drop from $55,214,334. I don't really expect much more from it domestically, it will make $10-13 million next weekend and then just continue to drop as it loses theatres. It's going to be lucky to reach $200 million domestic.

There should be a poll option "I want my 2hrs and 43 minutes back!".

From what I understand in other discussions, more people will want to go back and have not watched it to begin with than will ever want to see it twice.
