Default Question on Optical Digital Output limit

I know from the PS3 that the Optical output can not send uncompressed multichannel PCM and will default to 2 Channel PCM (or maybe a mixed down 2 channel track), but does anybody know the limit for the 2 channel audio as far as bit rate and sample rates?

The question came up when I was discussion the Neil Young Archive project with a friend. It is to be released with a 24/192 PCM track, will the optical interface be able to output this or would it convert to something like 24/96?

We're only talking sampling rates here...the higher the better, but once we start talking in the higher kbps and freq, it's harder for the hear to distinguish in sound quality

The reason behind the question is my friend uses an external DAC that has 24/192 DACs. He was wondering if the PS3 actually transmits 2 channel PCM at this bit/sampling rate if the source material is at this level like the Neil Young Archive that is set to come out in June.

It probably is a limited need for most as it would only work for 2 channel stereo as I know the Optical output does not support multi-channel uncompressed PCM
