you have to set the TV's digital audio output setting to Bitstream (or may say Dolby)

Do you have a digital television receiver with optical outs, or is this over the air?

first, let me just say running audio from the TV to the Receiver introduces problems with audio playback. It would be ideal to run the Optical cable from the PS3 directly to the receiver. If your receiver only has one optical input, you can always buy an optical switcher.

that being said, the audio going from the PS3 via HDMI into the TV is coming in as 2 channel PCM and is why you are getting stereo output.

I know that my tv only uses the optical to output ota broadcasts and doesn't pass anything else.
