If this lasts, then HD DVD will have a 5% greater chance of winning the format war. I hope to God that Sony doesn't quit making the discs.

Quote:
Target Technology sues Sony for using a patented technology in their Blu-ray discs.

Target's patent, which was submitted in 2004 and granted in 2006, describes the use of silver-based alloys.

The company demands that Sony stop producing Blu-ray discs until the case has been settled.

I kind of find it funny. Blu-ray has been a consumer product since 2003. That would mean the patents would have been filed way before that (no less 2004). Plus, if they sued Sony, the rest of the BDA would still be making Blu-ray discs (TDK, Ritek, etc.). Independent manufactuers pressing BD-ROMs aren't owned by Sony. They would be allowed to continue because Target is just suing Sony. There are no details in any news reports concerning this. That's why it doesn't make sense too me. The devil's in the details.

I think this is another MS/Toshiba FUD plan at work. You can sue anyone for anything (founded or not). People tend to automatically think a lawsuit is founded. IMO, that is what is being preyed upon. Hell, I could sue the state of Texas for being too big. Would I win?

Off Topec: Last semester in Economics, I learned that a man sued Subway because the penut butter cookies had peanuts in them, and there was not a warning that said so. And of course he won...
