set the BDP-S350 to "Direct", not mix.
It should display on the Onkyo: "TrueHD" or "Dts-HD MA" ...as for listening modes, I would use Mutlichannel, or Direct? maybe a fellow Onkyo owner could steer you better. But Neural Surround? ...probably not. Thats for XM and live radio broadcasts. ![]() Last edited by crackinhedz; 03-27-2009 at 04:32 AM. |

Why wouldn't you use the Dolby TrueHD listening mode? I don't use HDMI yet so I can't bitstream and verify which listening mode is best, but I would assume this mode would be the best.
Or is it that the receiver messes with the audio when in the Dolby TrueHD mode so the Direct and Multichannel modes are best? Makes sense that you would want to use Direct so that the receiver doesn't mess with the audio. I use Direct for my setup, though I use the analog inputs since my computer doesn't have HDMI. |

To the OP, on my 605 I bitstream from my BD-P1500 and to the very best of my recollection, when you do that, and the 605 front panel shows "TrueHD" or "DTS, Master Audio" (or thereabouts) the sound field processing is disabled; you can't select things like Dolby PLIIx, neural surround, and so forth. If your player is properly set to bitstream output and you're not getting the 605 to display that on the front panel, there is a menu in the 605 relating to the HDMI out, or monitor out that youll have to change to either off or on to get it to accept the bitstream. I had the same problem with my 605 and that's how I fixed it, took several hours of banging my head against the wall. But go into the 605 and check that setting. This is all dependent on you using HDMI, though. You didn't specify...in which case the point is, well, pointless. |

You need to let the receiver decode the audio signal, not the player, although I don't know the settings on a PS3 that would allow you to do this.

That will not work with the ps3. The ps3 is not capable of sending bitstream to the receiver. It internally decodes Dolby True HD and DTS HD master audio and sends it PCM to your receiver. The receiver will only read "PCM" on the display, but if you hit the display button on your ps3 you will see DolbyTrue HD or DTS HD Master Audio. That means the PS3 is decoding it, so the receiver can't display the Dolby True HD/DTS HD MA, but it is getting it through PCM. Quote:

Ok I´ve done everything but it doesn´t show. When I set the receiver to direct, only the front speakers work, no surround. On my receiver it does say PCM but i need to choose a listening mode in order to get surround since direct doesn´t do it. I´m doing something wrong but I don´t know what.
Here are the settings of the sony bdp350 player (In case I´m doing something wrong from the beginning): Audio Hdmi: Auto or 2ch PCM BD Audio Setting: Mix or Direct Audio ATT: On or Off Dolby Digital: Downmix PCM or Dolby Digital DTS: Downmix PCM or DTS Sampling Frequency: 48khz/16bit PCM or 96khz/24bit PCM Audio DRC: Auto or Standard or TV Mode or Wide Range Downmix: Dolby Surround or Normal |

Settings/comments in bold. You need to set the Audio Output Priority to HDMI as well.
Quote:
Also, are you passing audio through to your TV? The HDMI handshake with the TV may be forcing a two channel connection with the BD player. Try disabling the HDMI audio output from the receiver to the TV. Unplugging the HDMI cable between the AVR and TV will also tell you whether that's the problem. no, multichannel is from your HDMI cable, when your receiver states multichannel, that usually means that the incoming source has already been decoded and is simply streaming the decoded channels, i.e. the ps3 when your receiver is set to DIRECT, the output of the ps3 (on the ps3 set to LPCM) your receiver display will state multichannel PCM 5, 6 or 7 channel and the frequency too. when your blu-ray or hd-dvd player is set to bitstream your receiver will do the decoding within the receiver and your display will say either DTHD or DTS-HD-MA 5, 6 or 7 channels and give the frequency. if your receiver is doing the decoding within itself then your display will say the same thing that i mentioned the ps3 would. hope that helps. set it to receiver to direct for that input and set your standalone player to bitstream, snap in your HDMI and your rolling!

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but i didn't want to start a new one and it seems like the OP has solved his issue. Here's my question(s)
For another month until i move into my newly purchased home, i'm running the following components... Toshiba 42" LCD 720P 40G PS3 Onkyo 605 CS2, M50's, T15's I'm only running my PS3 to my receiver in an attempt to keep it simple. My PS3 is set as my "DVD" input in the receiver. HDMI running from my PS3 to the 605 and HDMI running from the 605 to my 42". I am getting Hi-Def audio on BD's, as when i hit the select button my my PS3 remote i'm always either getting HD-MA, or LPCM. My issue is that i keep hearing everyone say to run the 605 as the Multichannel, but when i hit the multichannel button my my 605 it wont display and sound or audio...Why is this? I know i have the right settings on my PS3, is it something i'm doing wrong on the receiver? When i first set this all up, i was only getting sound from my front soundstage on video games and not getting anything from my surrounds. Is this because i'm not using multichannel? HELP ME!!! |

How do i know if i'm using multichannel? I know i'm getting lossless audio, but want to make sure i'm using it in multichannel listening mode. I'm pretty sure i was using direct or something like that.
