In 1968, visual effects pioneer Douglas Trumbull (The Andromeda Strain, Close Encounters of the Third Kind) contributed to the ground-breaking special photographic effects of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Four years later, he stamped his own indelible mark on the science fiction genre with his mesmerising directorial debut – Silent Running.

In the not-so-distant future, Earth is barren of all flora and fauna, with what remains of the planet’s former ecosystems preserved aboard a fleet of greenhouses orbiting in space. When the crews are ordered to destroy the remaining specimens, one botanist, Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern, The ’Burbs), rebels and flees towards Saturn in a desperate bid to preserve his own little piece of Earth that was, accompanied only by the ship’s three service robots.

Featuring a captivating central performance by Dern, visual effects that rival anything in 2001 and a powerful ecological message, Silent Running is a haunting and prescient sci-fi classic that resonates even more strongly today than it did at the time of its original release.

I'll be glad to double dip. The old Uni master was surprisingly decent for one of their old masters but there was some room for improvement such as not having windowboxed credits.

Is it unusual that Arrow releases it when, while they also have a UK label, it was another one that released it in the UK? Or have Eureka's rights expired?

Silent Running is a US/Canada release.

This is a US exclusive, so it won't be getting a UK Arrow release.

I'm not sure if Eureka's rights are still in place, but there are still plenty of them sat on the shelves - I don't think it was (or is) a particularly big seller.

But I'll definitely be pulling the trigger on this one - I never got round to buying the Eureka release and the additional commentary with Kim Newman is going to be worth the price of admission alone.

It's not unusual at all. Most months have a US/Canada only release.

They've done it a few times over the years, so not that unusual. Similar to how some (most) Criterions don't get a release in the UK.

Uncommon -- a little. rare- not so much

I think this is close to the list of US items not released in the UK at all. There are a few others that got a US Arrow release at a completely different time than the UK leading to some odd region locking status (Cinema Paradiso and Creepshow 2) and a few US packaging exclusives. I think in a couple months those two will get true Dual Releases in UK and US
