Default A Few Questions About "Blade Runner"

First off, I would like to say that I'm very new to Blu-Ray. I finally got an HDTV 2 weeks ago, and just got a blu ray player last week, along with Pirates Of The Carribean, Ratatouille & Apocalypto.

Having seen those films and how amazing Blu-Ray movies look, im really interested in filling out a nice collection.

One movie that has always eluded me is Blade Runner. I have never seen this film, but I hear its amazing, and all this talk of cult classic. I love movies that are of a dystopian future such as Children Of Men, and I like science fiction movies as well.

My first question is, based on what i just said would Blade Runner be something i might like? I have nothing else to go on except Harrison Ford is one of my favorite actors, and ive always like most of Ridley Scott's stuff (except that last movie body of lies)

second, at the movie store i was at, they had 2 copies for purchase. They both looked exactly the same, i compared the back of the case and they were identical. One however was twice as thick, and the outer art was almost like a hologram look, shiny and distorted depending on viewing angle... the other was the normal thickness and a regular sleeve

any differences between those two? any reason to get one over the other?

Thanks!

To answer your first question, Blade Runner may not be for everyone. The movie is based on Philip K. Dick's novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" just in case you've read said novel. And if you like sci-fi films with a film noir feel to it (e.g. "Dark City"), then by all means, you'll enjoy it. Especially since the film has Harrison Ford in it.

And to answer your second question, the Blade Runner Blu-rays in the thick case with the hologram cover and the thin case with the regular cover are exactly the same, inside and out. I have the Blade Runner Blu-ray in the thick case myself, and it stands out the most in my collection. So there is no reason to get one over the other, as long as it's in your collection ASAP.

Hope this helps, Valkyr47!

ok thanks!

I might get the thicker one with hologram, its the same price so why not get the cooler case.

I have heard of philip k dicks work before

supposedly Total Recall is based off his work and i love that movie, i also love A Scanner Darkly which i guess is based on his writings

I guess the only thing that made me hesitant is whether or not its a serious sci-fi movie or not... as mentioned earlier i loved children of men, but I hate cheesy sci fi flicks, such as the fifth element... i know some people liked that but its honestly one of my least favorite movies ever

would Blade Runner be close to that movie with charlton heston? the one where they make you take the pill to kill yourself but he tries running from them, its set in the future, kind of a dystopian sci fi movie

and in regards to the cases, the Thicker one was the initial release case. the new ones are now closer to the size of regular blurays.

Soylent Green?

Anyway, you like Sci-fi, dystopian futures, Harrison Ford, Scott etc. Sounds like a worthy buy.

also one thing i'd make you aware of is blade runner isn't a standard action movie ala Die Hard. one can watch it that way, but might get bored quickly. it's a very thematic and in depth film that really asks you to think beyond the surface in regards to its content. that, imo, is part of what makes it so special.

thats ok, im actually not a huge action fan and like more serious fare that requires you to think/question certain things such as moral issues, etc etc

but, it does have some action right?

i guess the real reason im interested is because i can really appreciate good cinematography and i heard this movie has a lot of breathtaking scenes

This film has amazing cinematography. That's one of the best features of it to me. I think you'll enjoy it very much.

The Heston movie is Soylent Green, which IMO is a more straight forward Sci Fi thriller.
To me Blade Runner is more comparable to 2001 in that both are more art movies.
Don't get me wrong I'm a fan of both but they are not for everyone.
Blade Runner is slow paced by today's standards, which some don't like & IMO the ending is a bit anti climactic. Blade Runner is a beautifully shot & crafted movie, with great visuals & atmosphere that hold up extremely well after 27 years. Most people I've recommended it to who are either Sci Fi or Harrison Ford fans have thought it was pretty but a little boring.

It is mesmerizing film. I can watch it over and over. I personally consider it slightly more thriller than sci-fi.

I remember seeing BR way back when and not liking it at all. But the older I got....and into more noir type flicks...and upon getting it in blu.....I have fallen in love with it. There is just so much to take in within that movie.

Get it now!

Blade Runner was a movie I didn't like at all. I watched it maybe twice a few years apart and just didn't get it.

I heard over and over how good it was so I bought the blu-ray as it was a "must have". AGAIN... I didn't like it.

THEN...

I watched it in the early afternoon, wide awake, no munchies... and fell in love with the film.

It is also the movie I show to most people who have never seen blu-ray before...

You will love it.

Wow.. I'm amazed you haven't seen this yet.
Since you are describing pretty much everything you like, that is in that movie. It's very slow and it takes time to appreciate it.
It took years for me to fully appreciate it.
And on blu-ray you simply can't go wrong, it's truly beautiful!!!!

+1. I think you hit it on the head that it's a thriller with sci-fi elements. I always enjoyed it when I was young but didn't understand it per se, just loved the way it was filmed, Harrison Ford, etc., but as the years passed and I grew up it's just a great movie all around. Buy it if you're still not convinced by this thread!

I haven't even seen anything but the director's cut, which I hear from huge fans of the movie is NOT the cut of the movie to see. However, I loved the film just from that. You really have to pay attention to the film and what's going on, the symbolism throughout is sparse and hard to catch, but adds meaning to the film tenfold. I can't wait to get the movie on blu myself, and since it's averaging around $25-30 for an edition that I believe has 3 or 4 different versions of the film as well as a huge extras disc, that's simply incredible.
